Officiating Survey
« on: April 05, 2016, 08:53:14 AM »
We received this officiating survey link today. The e-mail stated that it was being conducted by East Carolina University but the survey site indicates it is from ODU.

Thanks, HL, just took it, shorter than the average halftime. Didn't enroll for the prize, left that for you guys :). I knew of North and South Carolina, didn't think there is a West Carolina -as Tennessee and Kentucky would probable get mad >:( and assume that East Carolina must be out in the ocean somewhere :).

Fellow forum buddies, take a few minutes and try it tiphat:.

Id be really interested to see the outcome of this survey.  Whether a research paper or proposal...gives me great memories of grad school research projects :)
Coach: "I've been doing this 30 years!  I know the rules!"
Ref: "Are you married coach?"
Coach (suddenly offguard): "umm...yeah, why?"
Ref: "I've been married 30 years and my wife says there is still room for improvement"
Coach: "<silence>"

Ralph,  East Carolina U. is in Greenville, NC.  If you ever saw "We Are Marshall", that is where they were flying back from when the Marshall team plane crashed outside of Huntington, WV.

There is a WestERN Carolina University, of which I am a proud graduate.
You may recall Jack Leggett of the Black Bears of Maine.  He got hired as BB coach at WCU my sophomore year and later went on to some success at Clemson.

Although I retired this year, I took the survey. Will be interested to see if we can get the results when completed.

Jack Leggett is from Vermont, he grew up in South Burlington.  He was Head Base Ball coach at Vermont in the 80's and went to Western Carolina.  UVM discontinued it's baseball program after he left.

As I recall- Jack is the only Double Catamount by coaching at UVM and WCU- the only two schools in the nation with the Catamount as their mascot.  His old bio at Clemson indicates he holds the FG distance record at Maine , 52 yards.

He imported quite a few "Yankee" recruits on the baseball team in his early years at Western.  Led to some angst on campus for a spell but it settled down.

Yes I remember Jack having a few Vermonsters on the team,  Catamounts are forever gone in Vermont.  The last one killed was in the late 1800s, although someone sees one every other year.

I recall (dimly, as adult Koolaide was a contributing factor ;)) "Legg's FG record kick...however , as I recall, it was 47 yards - not 52. Partaking at the pregame frat party may be responsible for those "missing" five yards...or....Jack may have remembered it differently ;).

Maine played (and lost) to East Carolina in the Tangerine Bowl back in the '60's.
The Tangerine Bowl back in the 60's isn't what it is today.
    Non-football question of the day:

 WHICH EXTENDS FURTHER WEST :
VIRGINIA OR WEST VIRGINIA????

Congrats, sir55, you win the Kewpie Doll aWaRd!!! VLAJ, I knew you knew ,being a resident of The Commonwealth and thanks for letting someone else win. That brings up a follow up question....Virginia was the underlying reason for one of the constitutional rules of presidential elections. Anyone ???

I believe that was the Electoral College. Virginia, being the largest in population at the time the Constitution was drawn up, wanted Congress to directly elect the president. The other states were worried about Virginia having too much sway, and we ended up with the Electoral College.

Not that it stopped Virginia from having a bunch of presidents in the early years of the country anyway...

On the right track, VALJ, the concern was that Virginia would dominate the Executive Branch and added the requirement that the president and vice-president couldn't be residents of the same state/commonwealth. Sorta' like the Patriots dominating the NFL and the Red Sox the AL.

2000 - PATS  aWaRd aWaRd aWaRd aWaRd     RED SOX  aWaRd aWaRd aWaRd - 2016

I think this is slightly incorrect. The electors from a state must vote so that either the president or the vice-president they vote for is not of the same state, but they can vote for candidates from a same but different state.

Eg. if the presidential and vice-presidential candidates are both from New York, all other states can vote for both but New York electors must vote for one or the other, not both.

Interesting point, Kalle, I do recall this being an issue of sorts in the 2000 election. Some claimed that Dick Cheney was a resident of Texas, as was George Bush, thus making the case that it was an invalid ticket. Somehow Cheney showed proof of his Wyoming residency and the concern then shifted to the hanging/dimpled/whatever chads in Florida. I'll see if I can find more on this rule after I bone up on baseball rules (my season starts tomorrow).

I'm not a (US constitution) lawyer, but to me the 12th Amendment is pretty clear. More details eg. here http://www.politifact.com/punditfact/statements/2015/apr/16/lawrence-odonnell/president-vice-president-same-state-allowed/

Edit: remember that the presidential and vice-presidential ballots are separate in the Electoral College, so nothing prevents the New York electors (in my example) from voting eg. a Republican presidential candidate from New York and a Democrat vice-presidential candidate from California. I do not know what would happen if all candidates were from New York...

Thanks, Kalle, I glad to hear that some of the "talking heads" were confused, too! :o We don't need to have all the candidates from New York  :) as they already have the Yankees ::)!

Baseball season starting up is a lot like the season's first round of golf, all the bad habits start anew exactly as before, without missing a beat, and the beat goes on.
