Fairly new official here looking to buy my first new pair of pants. Any recommendations for good brand/site to look at?  Thanks.

I really like the Smitty's that I have.  The lightweight ones are great for the hot days and the cold weather ones keep me warm on the cold days.

Amen to what Bossman says. Smitty's are a better and more comfortable fit.

I have Smitty's, Honig's and Gerry Davis.  My Honig's snaps do not seem to grip as well.  I tend to prefer my Smitty's.

Honigs seem to work better for me in both light and regular.

My pants were pretty long and baggy at first, with a lot of "scrunch" around the ankles.  Took them to a tailor who made them fit like a glove for $20. Good investment to look like a pro.

While we are on the topic of pants, does anyone know if you can have the waist taken in on them (I have the honig's brand in standard and another brand for the rain pants)? Since the last time I officiated, I have lost 40 pounds and kept it off.

I would like to get back into officiating, Standard weight and rain pants and didn't want to get new pants unless I absolutely had to.

40 lbs?

Unless you want your pockets touching after the alterations, I'd just get new pants.  Sell your old ones if you are worried about the cash to maybe recoup the cost of 1 pair.

Yeah 40 pounds and forgot to mention 4 inches off my waist.

Don't feel confident that I could even make enough to recoup a decent amount for a new pair.

What I was thinking is to try altering them and see how they turn out and if not, just donate them somewhere. Seems to me that would be a cost effective option rather than going for a new pair off the bat.

Wouldn't 1 game fee = about the same price for a pair of pants?  I don't think that's too much to give up.  I'm sure your game fee is at least $40, which would pay for a new pair.

Alterations cost money unless you do them yourself.  If you're going to spend money on alterations, I would just put that money toward new pants.  Plus, if you're altering pants that much, they'll probably look terrible.

If cash is that big of a worry for you, maybe find someone in your association that is roughly the same waist size as you and buy a pair of his old ones.  The black pants don't look as awful used as the knickers used to.

Unless you've got one heckuva seamstress/tailor, 4 inches off of a waistband is going to be tough.  Once you cut the elastic, its pretty tough to work with.  You might be able to gather up the waistband an inch or so but 4", nah.  I think you just need to treat yourself to a new pair, 4" is quite an accomplishment.

Yeah that is true, and I think that has gone up too.

Never thought of it that way. But that is a good point.

That is true. I remember those knickers well and they sure didn't make a fashion statement  ;D

Thank you for your kind words HLinNC. I think all things considering, I may as well treat myself to some new pants.

Thank you for your input HLinNC and Bossman72. Helped me make a better decision and not waste the money on alterations.

If worst comes to worst I can donate my pants to a new official, I believe in giving back :)

Or you could reference rule 13-1-4 and do the coin flip sans pants   yEs:
Coach: "I've been doing this 30 years!  I know the rules!"
Ref: "Are you married coach?"
Coach (suddenly offguard): "umm...yeah, why?"
Ref: "I've been married 30 years and my wife says there is still room for improvement"
Coach: "<silence>"
