Drop kicks. Why is everyone looking at me like that?
« on: June 23, 2017, 03:59:38 PM »
Drop kicks.  The play that died when Nile Kinnicks plane went down.  What do we know about drop kicks?  Yes, these are still being attempted this century.  I've seen it but I've never heard it discussed at association meetings, clinics, or camps.  Would a majority of us be caught flat footed if one of these occurred?  Are we prepared mentally and mechanically?

What is a drop kick?

When can a drop kick be used?

Is a drop kicker afforded the same protections as a punter?

If a drop kick is illegally used, what is the penalty?

If a drop kick scores, what is the point value?

If a drop kick is used for a free kick, can a kicker pick the ball up off the tee and drop kick?

Are deep officials in position to rule on a potential drop kick?

Welcome, Greenmachinist, to our forum. I hope you find it both interesting and informative. Being from Patriot's Nation, I watched Doug Flute drop kick a try several years ago. Lining up in a deep shotgun, he had to announcers confused as they mumbled, "If they are going for two, why isn't Brady in  ??? ???" As he drop kicked it they understood :!# :!# ! The BJ, stationed under the pipes and on the end line also understood and promptly signaled ^good.

It was mentioned  that was the first scoring drop kick in the NFL since the 40's. A couple of years ago the Patriots tried a drop kick on a kickoff, with the kicker picking the ball up off the tee and drop kicking it in hopes of catching the Eagles sleeping....it didn't.....they lost :(.

Footballs used to be rounder and easier to drop kick. Soccer balls are still round and are often drop kicked by the goalie. Drop-kick Murphy's serves a good brew before a Red Sox game. Arena football allowed 4 points for a drop kicked field goal....that ends my knowledge of drop kicks.
