Overbuilt facemasks have been outlawed for a few years, but Akron just released a picture of
this.... interesting interpretation
.
Word is that it's for show only and they aren't going to use it in a game, because there's no way that's legal -- right? Except that I don't think the rules specifically disallow it. Non-standard overbuilt facemasks are illegal (Rule 1-4-7-l), but a) there's no definition in the rules as to what constitutes "overbuilt" and b) this is example is likely "underbuilt", albeit still non-standard.

The rules are there if you need them.

Legal? With those sharp points? That is clearly an unsafe piece of equipment that no one should allow a player to use.

Let me rephrase. Not an overbuilt FM. As to the "sharp" edges, I don't know. I might check it, and if I felt it was too sharp, tell them to put tape on the ends, or replace it.

If a kid reaches in there and grabs the facemask I bet he will learn not to do that again. A hole in the hand once would be all one would need.

I say shut it down. Facemasks shouldn’t be used as fashion statements.

Surely that falls under rule 1-4-7-a?
Illegal equipment includes the following (see Appendix E for additional details):
a. Equipment worn by a player that could endanger other players.

Now look, you know different people think about life in different ways. Lawyers think life is a big court room, doctors probably think life is like a big operation, and bus drivers think life is... er... a big bus I guess, who knows what the hell those guys think. Anyway, I've always thought of life as a big football game...
