Cold Weather Gear
« on: November 06, 2019, 10:38:39 AM »
Just wanted to check in with the group, Friday night game time temps are expected to be in the upper 20s with windchills possibly in the upper teens.  What type of extra gear do you guys wear to stay warm?

Under Armour cold gear, Heat Holders socks.  If needed, a cold weather hood/balaclava - and even if it's not needed, I can pull it down around my neck and use it as a gaiter.  And I finally ordered a cold-weather. fleece lines, water and wind resistant shirt after all these years.  I'm really looking forward to trying that out Friday night.

I just haven't been able to find a pair of gloves that I'm happy with that both keep my hands warm and give me a decent enough grip.  I usually end up with my hands in a cold weather pouch like the players wear that has a couple of hand warmers going.

The Honig's Windstopper is the best piece of clothing I have ever purchased for officiating. It's great for both cold and rain. I paid $50 for it and I see it's now $43.

Smitty has a heavy shirt that's $89 and it's a great shirt!

Gloves help.  I heard an odd method from an old timer and I actually like it.  Take Vasoline and rub it on the backs of your hands and your face.  It takes the edge off the cold.  I like that better than gloves.  You can use a hand muff with that method too if it's super cold.

Another tip is put a thin ankle sock on, then put grocery store / walmart plastic bags over your feet.  Then put a normal sock over the bag.  Warmest your feet will ever be!  Helps in the rain too.

Chapstick helps.

One thing I've never gotten good at is dealing with down indicators and gloves. I could get one of the slider types, but I like the tactile sensation so I can tell the down without looking.

Me too, but you can't feel it with the gloves on, so I use the slider with gloves.

Try shooter's or tactical gloves.

Thanks for the suggestion.  Got a pair of cold weather tactical gloves off Amazon for last night and they were perfect!

Try shooter's or tactical gloves.

Black nitrile gloves work great also, especially if it is wet

Hands were a touch chilly, but never made it to cold, and I had better grip with the gloves on the balls that are a bit worn than I do my bare hands.

that's usually me :)
Really though this time of year - at least in central FL we do break out L/S stripes - if needed.
I think this Friday will be about 65* at kickoff which means probably short sleeves for at least the first half.
Tell you what, we've had on L/S a few times and broiled during the first half for playoff games.
State finals games in short sleeves are more common than not.

The key to warm feet is keeping them dry, and everybody's feet sweat.

Liner socks, at Cabela's or on Amazon.

If you don't own any then you don't know.
