Instant replay during playoffs...
« on: October 04, 2020, 02:53:40 PM »
I am just wondering out of curiosity, is instant replay used during the playoffs similar to the one used in college football?

What are the differences, if any, between the two?

When it’s used the rules are the same. The ones working it are the ones who work it for college games.

It is ONLY used for the 12 state championship games.

This is incorrect. The UIL specifies a smaller set of circumstances that can be reviewed. I believe the document is on the UIL website.

Does anybody else think under present circumstances this is a bad idea? What happened to not changing the rules in the middle of the game? Personally, I think this came from a call made in a state championship game that probably should have been reversed. But what if a call occurs in a state semi final? Or quarter final? Or first round game? Or district game?

...then you live with the results.  It is, what it is.

I suspect an influence, was playing championship games in venues such as Jerry's World that have multiple, extreme high resolution cameras in place that show replays to the crowd.  Makes officials look extraordinarily bad if the call on the field is obviously (with the hindsight of replay and slow-mo) incorrect.

It will never go away.  Eventually, I think they'll institutute replay for all venues that technology-wise, have that capability (such as playoff games in college stadiums).  A long ways off.  But it's coming.
