S/B Weekly Quiz 9
« on: October 29, 2020, 10:09:18 PM »
S/B Quiz 9, my responses:

1. 4/Goal @ B-5. A12’s catchable legal forward pass crosses the neutral zone and falls incomplete. B54 interfered with A87 while the ball was in the air at the B-1.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
A, 1/G, B-2, snap (25).
When the ball is snapped outside the B-2, a penalty for DPI can’t place the ball beyond the B-2. The DPI penalty includes a first down for Team A. Note: Succeeding spot must be in line with the previous spot, laterally on the field. The play clock is set to 25 seconds (due to the completion of the penalty), and both the play clock and the game clock will start on the referee’s signal.

2. 1/10 @ A-20. QB A12 tosses the ball backward to A33 at the A-10 who runs around the right end. Tight end A88 holds B92 at the A-21. A33 is tackled at the A-32.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
A, 1/19, A-11, ready (25).
The end of run related to the holding foul is beyond the neutral zone, so the penalty is enforced per the 3 & 1 principal, at the spot of the foul (A-21), 10 yards, taking the ball to the A-11, and repeat the down. The play clock is set to 25 seconds (due to the completion of the penalty), and both the play clock and the game clock will start on the referee’s signal.

3. Free Kick @ A-35. The ball bounces toward the sideline. At the B-10, the ball takes a high bounce and B22 leaps to try to grab it. He is airborne as he grasps the ball, crosses the sideline at the B-10, and returns to the ground out of bounds.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
B, 1/10, B-10, snap (40 and running).
When a player is airborne from inbounds, he remains an inbounds player until he touches something out of bounds. Thus, B22’s grasp of the ball is legal touching (the game clock should be started). When B22 lands out of bounds, the ball belongs to B at the spot where the ball crossed the sideline. The play clock is set to 40 seconds and should start automatically by the PCO when the ball becomes dead on the kickoff down. The game clock will next start on the snap.

4. Try @ B-3. Running back A30 muffs QB A10’s attempted handoff at the B-4. B99 picks up the ball at the B-2, is hit there and fumbles. The ball rolls into the end zone where it is recovered by B50 while grounded.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
B, Free Kick B-20, free kick timing (25).
B99’s fumble is the impetus that causes to the ball to be behind B’s goal line where it becomes dead in B’s possession. Safety, 2 points for Team A, with a free kick from the B-20 to follow. The play clock is set to 25 seconds (due to the safety), and will start on the referee’s signal. The game clock will start in accordance with free kick timing rules.

5. 4/4 @ B-20. Team A elects to go for the first down. B77 is in the neutral zone at the snap but does not make contact. The ball carrier is forced out of bounds at the B-17 with 2:40 showing on the game clock in the second quarter.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
A, 1/10, B-15, ready (25).
The offside penalty from the previous spot results in a first down for Team A. Since Team B will NOT next snap the ball, the game clock will start on the referee’s signal. The play clock is set to 25 seconds, and will also start on the referee’s signal.

6. 2/15 @ A-35. Nose tackle B55 is flagged for roughing the passer during a play in which A88 catches a pass at the A-40 and is tackled inbounds at the A-45 by B27. After the ball is dead, A88 makes an obscene gesture at B27.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
A, 1/10, B-25, ready (25).
The 15 yard RPS penalty is added to the end of the run (A-45). The 15 yard dead-ball UNS is then penalized from the spot where the RPS foul leaves the ball (B-40), taking the ball to the B-25, with a first down for A. The play clock is set to 25 seconds (due to the completion of the penalties), and both the play clock and the game clock will start on the referee’s signal.

7. 1/10 @ B-25. B29 intercepts a legal forward pass at the B-1 and fumbles at the B-4. B45 races in and recovers the fumble at the B-3, his momentum carrying him into the end zone. To avoid being tackled in his end zone, B45 throws a backward pass which teammate B37 muffs. A45 is the last to touch the ball before it rolls over the end line.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
B, free kick, B-20, free kick timing (25).
The impetus on the ball is with B45’s carry of the ball into his own end zone (no momentum involved). Thus, when the ball goes OB, Team B is responsible for the ball being dead behind their own end line, which is safety, 2 points for Team A, with a free kick to follow from the B-20. The play clock is set to 25 seconds (due to the safety), and will start on the referee’s signal. The game clock will start in accordance with free kick timing rules. Note: Since B45’s backward pass does not re-enter the field of play, it is ignored with respect to impetus, and A45’s touch of the ball changes nothing about the status of the ball.

8. 3/5 @ B-30. Quarterback A12 sprints to his right outside the tackle box. Under pressure by the defensive line, A12 then reverses directions until he is directly behind the original location of the ball at the snap. At this point on the B-40 he throws a forward pass that hits the ground at the B-25. There were no eligible Team A receivers with a reasonable opportunity to catch the pass.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
A, 4/5, B-30, snap (40 and running).
Once A12 leaves the tackle box, he is permitted to ground the ball by throwing it beyond the neutral zone (including the NZ extended), without regard to proximity of eligible A players. There is no foul on this down. The next down is 4th down at the previous spot. The play clock is set to 40 seconds and should start automatically by the PCO when the ball becomes dead on the previous down. The game clock will next start on the snap.

Let me know what I screwed up.

#4 is a try.  1 point safety for team A and A kicks off.

#6 the uns foul is on team A so the yardages will effectively cancel.

Actually they do not cancel, by rule or effectively, as team A will get the first down even though they did not reach line to gain. Yard line where we end up is the end of the last run, yes.

4. Yes, 1 point on the safety on the try. Thanks.

6. As Kalle said, the penalties don’t cancel, but they will net to the B-45. The important thing is that A will have a first down, even if the result of the distances didn’t leave the ball at/beyond the line-to-gain, because the RPS includes a first down for A. Then the UNS is enforced, and the new line-to-gain is established after that penalty is enforced.
But, I did misread the statement, and tried to penalize the wrong team. Thanks.

It was a poor choice of words on #6.  You are correct about the first down.  I only meant that the spot would still be at the end of the run.
