Ball Position for a new series
« on: April 25, 2021, 12:27:29 PM »
I know there are differences between high school and college.

But after a change of possession (turnover, punt, missed fg, touchback, etc) when can the offense choose which of the 5 ball positions it would like to start its series??  I must be overlooking it in the rule book.

After a touchback or an unsuccessful field goal snapped from inside the 20 that crosses the neutral zone and is untouched by Team B beyond the neutral zone. Anything else (punt, change of possession, turnover on downs, etc.), the l ateral  position of the ball cannot be changed.

The biggest one that people miss is a free kick out of bounds. If a free kick goes out of bounds between the goal lines, the ball must be spotted on the hash mark on that side.

  • The rules are there if you need them.

For NCAA rules, on a Try (8-3), following an unsuccessful field goal and the ball will be placed at the B-20 (8-4), and following any touchback (8-6). Team A can have it placed anywhere on/between the hash marks (not just one of five positions), if requested before the RFP signal, or before 25 seconds on a 40-second play clock. Technically, and although is isn't a snap location, Team A may make a free kick from any point on/between the hash marks, but, once they position the ball on a tee, or take a position to make a drop kick or punt they can't change that position. In all of these instances, the ball may be relocated if either team takes a charged team time out.

Note that when the ball is placed at the B-35 following a free kick out of bounds, the ball is placed at the hash mark to the sideline where the ball went OB - no option.

1) Touchback (including fair catch inside 25 on kickoff).
2) Try (Unless preceded by Team A foul or offsetting fouls).
3) Missed FG inside the 20. (Side note: In this scenario if a spot isn't chosen, the spot defaults to middle of field, regardless of previous play's ball location).
4) Start of OT possession.

NFHS includes all of those plus any time there is a fair catch.  FG rules are like punts, so #3 above doesn't apply.
I've found that HS coaches never choose their hash.

I’ve seen that many times on a try when they go for two.
