The subbing starts at about 0:01 on the video, and the U starts to leave the ball (ie. the ball is ready for play) at 0:07. I think six seconds is long enough for team B to at least start subbing if they want to respond (no incoming substitutes seen, it is of course possible that there were some).

I guess the team B coach is arguing that there was no signal to allow for team B substitution? True but the U is obviously on the ball and stopping team A from snapping the ball, so it seems to me that the crew (or at least U) is allowing team B to respond.

I believe that the R has the hold for sub signal as soon as the video starts.  Also, should there have been a flag down for IS for the wideout who came down the sideline directly into formation without ever coming inside the numbers?

Good catch. IMO, definitely should have been a flag on that, as this is somewhat of a trick play (in other circumstances I would prefer not to have a flag on that as he is obviously seen by the defense and covered).

I say no flag for the sub. Defense knew he was there and reacted

It doesn't matter when the subbing starts.  It matters when it ends (all replaced players are obvious and all incoming subs are obvious, including where they are in the formation).

Except that it happened last minute and a defender who apparently had other assignment(s) went running toward the sideline last second.  The rule says that's a foul since the A player is required to come inside the numbers then back out which would have allowed B more time to react and get in position and/or resulted in the play clock running out.  IMHO he did gain a material advantage with the substitution process here.  I'm fine with letting it go if it's early in the play clock AND he's observed early on by B but again, IMHO that's not what happened here.

The defender had 7 seconds of reaction. From the tine he saw the sub and started moving out until ball snapped -7 seconds.  Defender was in position and stationary for 4 seconds before ball snapped.  You are being way too technical

We'll agree to disagree here.  We've always been told that in a hurry up situation we in fact need to call this since we can't fix it later.  It's a DB foul that should be enforced per our supervisor.

Wouldn’t be the first time a supervisor is wrong

So let's analyze a bit here:

1.  We're at crunch time based on both the score and the game clock
2.  We've got a clear DEAD BALL substitution violation.
3.  A knows the substitution rules and B has an absolute right to match up substitute here
        - which is why 99% of coaches would not substitute on offense here
4.  B notices the late sub and a B player leaves his position and heads out to "cover" A
5.  But maybe the B player is not the right player to be covering the incoming A substitute?

So, simply because any B player saw the A player we're good???  Really???    :sTiR:

I'd be interested to see if the powers to be decide to include this one in this week's video clips.

Looks like a FST on the L guard as the U moves out as well.

The Referee never looks at the Team B bench, so he doesn't know if B was reacting to try to substitute/match-up or not. We don't either since there is also no video of the Team B bench.
