S/B Quiz 3 2022
« on: June 04, 2022, 08:52:22 PM »
What'd I miss?

1. 1/10 @ B-25. Defensive end B88 is lined up on the outside shoulder of tackle of A75. On the initial line charge, B88 blocks tackle A75 below the waist from the side inside the tackle box. A44 gains 4 yards on the play.
RULING:
A, 2/6, B-21, ready running (40 and running).
Team B players aligned within a yard of the NZ, and within the width of the Tackle Box extended beyond the NZ, may BBW in any direction on their initial charge

Note: This ruling assumes B88 is aligned within 1 yard of the NZ, and A75 is aligned not more than 5 yards from the snapper, at the snap.

2. 1/10 @ A-30. As ball carrier A20 sweeps around the end and heads upfield, he lowers his head and contacts defensive end B89 who is trying to tackle him. B89’s head is up and the players meet helmet to helmet at the A-35 where A20 is downed.
RULING:
A, 2/5, A-35, ready running (40 and running).
No foul. Neither A20 nor B89 are defenseless (AR 9-1-4-II).

3. 1/10 @ B-45. Ball carrier A33 has gained several yards and is in the grasp of two defenders. A33’s forward progress has been stopped at the B-40 and he is clearly being driven back, but the ball has not been declared dead. Linebacker B55 crouches and thrusts himself forward, driving his forearm into the side of A33’s helmet at the B-42.
RULING:
A, 1/10, B-25, ready (25).
UNR with Targeting by B55. All required elements for 9-1-4 Targeting are present, since A33 is grasped and his progress has been stopped by opponents. B55 is disqualified.

4. On a one-point try attempt from the B-3, Team A’s kick is blocked. B21 recovers the ball and advances across Team A’s goal line. During B21’s run, B44 clips.
RULING:
A, kickoff, A-35, free kick timing (25).
The foul by B44 is declined, the apparent 2-point touchdown by B21 is canceled, and the try is over, all by rule. Proceed to the kickoff.

5. Try @ B-3. B79 is in the neutral zone at the snap. B20 intercepts a forward pass and A55 tackles him by pulling the face mask.
RULING:
A, try, B-3, no game clock (25).
The fouls offset, and, since B’s foul occurred prior to the change of team possession, the try is repeated.

6. 4/6 @ B-18. Team A’s unsuccessful field goal attempt strikes the ground beyond the neutral zone and bounces back behind the neutral zone to Team B’s 28-yard line, where it goes out of bounds. The kick was untouched beyond the neutral zone.
RULING:
B, 1/10, B-28, snap (25).
Since the legally kicked ball was untouched by B beyond the NZ, the ball belongs to Team B where it went out of bounds.

7. 3/5 @ B-20. Defensive back B44 intercepts a forward pass in his end zone. While still in the end zone he fumbles the ball. It rolls forward, goes into the field of play, and in the scramble the ball goes back into the end zone where B44 recovers while grounded.
RULING:
B, free kick, B-20, free kick timing (25).
Since the ball, fumbled by B44 in his own end zone, travels into the field of play, where it then travels back across B’s goal line, where the ball becomes dead, the impetus is from B44’s fumble; thus, the result of the down is a safety – 2 points for Team A, followed by a Team B free kick from their 20-yard line.

8. Free Kick @ A-35. The ball is rolling on the ground on Team B’s three-yard line when B10 kicks the ball into the end zone and over the end line.
RULING:
B, free kick, B-20, free kick timing (25), OR
A, kickoff, A-45, free kick timing (25).
B10 commits a foul for illegally kicking the ball. Additionally, the impetus on the ball is from the kick by B10; thus, when it goes out of bounds behind B’s goal line, the result of the down is a safety, 2 points for Team A (the penalty for B10’s foul is declined). However, Team A has the option to refuse the safety, and penalize the foul from the previous spot (10 yards) and repeat the kickoff.

Well, other than the clock status, I guess I got those right. Regarding the clock status, I believe I was conditioned to consider there was a penalty to be completed, so the game clock was stopped to complete the penalty. No. No foul, so no penalty to complete, so the game clock would not stop, and the play clock starts automatically with the dead-ball on the previous down. (How'd I get the play clock right, but mess up the game clock? Now, there's a mystery.)
As I keep saying, those are not errors that would at all likely occur on the field. Just an issue of reading comprehension. Slow down. Slow down. Slow is smooth; smooth is fast.
