Delay of game signal

Is the signal for delay the same in NCAA as it is in NFHS?

Probably. Don’t know NFHS, but go to NCAApublications.com and download the NCAA book and check Appendix F. One arm on top of the other out in front of the chest.

And considering this signal is used for things other than true delays of game, this is exactly why a referee’s field mic is needed at every stadium. Is it Exceeding the Play Clock? Disconcerting Signals? Abrupt Defensive Movement? Game Administration Interference? Several more. When the R gives signal 21, every person in the stadium except (perhaps) the game officials will assume ‘exceeding the play clock.’ But, when we step off 5 against Team B, they’ll think we’re moving in the wrong direction. Then, when we spot the ball, they lose their minds, and start screaming and swearing. And the PA guy has no idea what is going on, and can’t offer any help. A simple announcement by the R at least lets folks know what is going on. They may not like it, but at least they’ll know.
Same for “illegal procedure” (only the name of a signal; no such foul). Is it FST? Illegal Snap? Illegal formation? Many others.

How about “ it’s a lateral”. No such term anywhere in the book. It’s either a forward pass or a backward pass. That bothers me every time I hear it. Another one is the muffed punt,  you hear all the time “ the receiver fumbled it” when he never had possession.

As far as disconcerting signals, NFHS has a separate signal for that. It’s the old “not wearing required equipment properly” signal, which is a single hand behind the head.

The reason I've asked this question is that most White Hats that I see signal with their arms off their chest perpendicular to the ground whereas the proper signal is arms flat against the chest in an X fashion. I know its small but where did that come from? NFL possibly?

That's one of the reasons I suggested that you look at the graphic of S21 in the NCAA rules. It clearly shows one arm over the other, in front of the body. Tried to attach a graphic, but couldn't get it under 700KB.

What you're describing is the NCAA signal (S21). NCAA and NFHS use different signals for Delay of game.

NCAA changed the S21 to be the current one in 2014. Before that it was the same as the one still in use in NFHS (arms crossed in front of the chest).

I've not actually seen the NFHS delay of game signal used at my games, only the NCAA signal. And this is in a state where NFHS rules are used.

I don’t know of any WH in our state that uses the “old” signal.  I also don’t know of any player, coach, PA announcer, reporter, or fan that gets confused by that.

The vision of my Mom , with her arms folded, asking me if I've done my homework, has always has been my signal for delay of game. It is also ice-hockey's signal for iceing, which in a way, is delaying that game.  The crossed arms in front of chest (#21) is hockey's singal for interference. In my daze of youth, it was my signal for : "Mom, it wasn't me that was naughty :embarassed:".

I'm too old to change, but I will inform the 'youngsters'.

I don't like DOG calls, as the clock starts on the snap  >:(.

I didn't like signal # 23 to become for B/R's disconerting act as #19 would have surficed  >:(.

I like hockey's penalty shot signal ( hands crossed at wrist above head)  :) and will suggest it the next time we need a new signal  :thumbup.

DON'T FEAR, GUYS, SANTA'S 'WISH LIST' SHOULD BE HERE SOON !   tiphat:

Signals largely become moot when we have a field mic.

Speaking of hockey (which I dearly love, BTW), I wish the R's in hockey would use the same protocol as football announcements. They tend to give the team and player first, then the amount of the penalty, then the foul itself. That's all backward. If any of y'all are listening (reading), try this:

"Interference. Number 63. Boston. 2 minutes." (Better yet: "Roughing. Number 63. Boston. 10-minute Game misconduct." I'll bet somebody gets the reference.  >:D)

I was once told by an ice hockey ref that he announces the home player first on matching penalties...the boos start... then the visiting player....the boos become quiet.

I've followed that by announcing/signaling home penalty first on double fouls..it works.

I think you are underestimating how many people watch games in places/conditions where they cannot here the TV sound.

I understand what you are saying. But, these days, I am working where NOBODY can hear the sound from the TV. My audience is those 275 mommas, daddies, grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, and cousins in the stands on Friday nights. Once in a while, we get a 3K - 4K audience. TV? Ha.
Yeah, OK. The local in-town school district broadcasts the Thursday night game (and I get my share of those). They have a field mic. But, virtually the same audience. If Nielsen did a survey of townsfolk on one of those Thursday nights, I dare say they might show a 0.0 share.
No. It ain't TV folks that I'm targeting. It is the butts-in-the-seats. They bought a ticket, and they deserve to know what is going on. SOOOOO much better to be able to explain with a verbal announcement - along with a signal.

Yeah, I had my day with 15K to 70K in the stands, and on TV - somewhere - every week. You are right. Those guys slugging down a hot beer in a cheesy dive somewhere ain't gonna hear the announcement. Signals are helpful for the most rudimentary fouls. But, using S21 for a disconcerting signals foul ain't gonna make sense to a visual-only audience. Can't do anything about that. But, a field mic within a stadium can help tremendously.

The one thing I don't like about hockey announcements is that TV doesn't always cut to the Referee on every penalty announcement like football does.  Doing that better would do 2 things:  1 - Inform people by seeing the Referee announcement that a penalty/power play is coming up (instead of being surprised by the graphic 30 seconds into the power play) since you might be watching with no sound.  2 - Educate the fans more about the rules of hockey.

Also, I don't mind the "backwardness" of their announcements.  I like that it's different from football and unique to that sport.

Did nobody get my reference? I'm disappointed. Brad Marchand is the evil genius in the NHL, and bane of virtually all other NHL teams. The guy we all love to hate. Like Kyle Busch in NASCAR, we hate him, but dang he's good.
