S-B Quiz 2023-04
« on: June 20, 2023, 10:48:13 AM »
Been out of action for a while, so I didn't post 'my' answers before now. I see S-B's answers have already been posted, but I haven't read them. I'll post mine, then I'll check S-B and see how I did. Fingers crosssed.

S-B Quiz 2023-04

1. 2/10 @ B-30. The game clock is running late in the second half. Team A trails by four points and is out of timeouts. After the ball is ready for play lineman A66 commits a false start, and when the officials stop the game clock it reads 0:13.
RULING:
A, 2/15, B-35, 0:03 (2), ready (no play clock).
On the assumption that “…late in the second half…” means second period, then the false start foul by A66 that caused the game clock to stop immediately during the last minute of the second period gives Team B the option (in addition to the 5-yard distance penalty from the previous spot) of a 10-second subtraction from the game clock, which will obviously be accepted. The game clock will start on the referee’s signal. With less than 25-seconds in the period, the play clock will not run.

2. 2/10 @ B-30. The game clock is running late in the second half. Team A trails by four points and is out of timeouts. After the ball is ready for play lineman A66 commits a false start, and when the officials stop the game clock it reads 0:08.
RULING:
Halftime.
Again, on the assumption that “…late in the second half…” means second period, then the false start foul by A66 that caused the game clock to stop immediately during the last minute of the second period gives Team B the option (in addition to the 5-yard distance penalty from the previous spot) of a 10-second subtraction from the game clock, which will obviously be accepted. By accepting the 10-second subtraction, time in the second period expires with the penalty, so the half is over.

3. 2/10 @ B-30. The game clock is running late in the second half. Team A trails by two points and is out of timeouts. At the snap Team A has five players in the backfield. A22 carries for a three-yard gain to the B-27. When the ball is declared dead the game clock reads 0:08.
RULING:
A, 2/15, B-35, 0:08 (2), ready (no play clock).
The illegal formation foul by Team A is a live-ball that does NOT cause the game clock to stop immediately; thus, there is no option for a subtraction from the game clock. The accepted 5-yard penalty from the previous spot takes the ball to the B-35, and the game clock will start on the referee’s signal. With less than 25-seconds in the period, the play clock will not run.

4. 2/5 @ B-20. Late in the 4th quarter with the game clock running, Tackle B77 is in the neutral zone at the snap but does not make contact. QB A12 rolls out to pass, runs to the B-17 and throws a forward pass, which falls incomplete. The game clock reads 0:15 after the play.
RULING:
A, 2/5, B-20, 0:15 (4), snap (25).
B77’s offside foul is offset by A12’s illegal incomplete forward pass foul; thus, the down will be repeated at the previous spot. Offsetting fouls do not qualify for a subtraction from the game clock. The game clock will start on the snap, and the play clock will be set to 25 seconds and will start on the referee’s signal.

5. 2/Goal @ B-9. Team A is behind late in the 2nd quarter with the game clock running and neither team has a timeout remaining. A66 is in a three-point stance, misses the snap count and lurches forward, committing a false start. B77 then commits a flagrant dead-ball personal foul in retaliation. The game clock is stopped with 8 seconds remaining in the half.
RULING:
Halftime, and the 15-yard penalty for B77’s UNR foul will be enforced at the kickoff for the 3rd period.
A66’s false start foul causes the game clock to stop immediately, and includes the option of a 10-second subtraction from the game clock, which will be accepted by Team B to end the half. The 15-yard penalty for B77’s UNR foul will be enforced at the third period kickoff, and B77 is EJECTED from the game.

6. 2/5 @ B-35. Late in the game with the game clock running, ball carrier A35 is tackled at the B-28. B79 goes to the ground with an injury and the game clock reads 0:45.
RULING:
A, 1/10, B-28, 0:45 (4), ready (40).
The injury occurred in conjunction with the stoppage of the game clock for the new series for Team A; therefore, there is no option for a subtraction from the game clock. However, the play clock is set to 40-seconds due to the injury to a Team B player, and both clocks start on the referee’s signal.

7. 2/5 @ B-30. Late in the game, A44 runs to the B-27 and is down inbounds. During the down A22’s helmet comes off (no helmet foul by the defense) and B77 goes down with an injury. When the clock is stopped it reads 0:58 in the fourth quarter.
RULING:
A, 3/2, B-27, 0:58 (4), ready (40),  OR A, 3/2, B-27, 0:58 (4), snap (25).
The loss of his helmet by A22 is counteracted by the injury to B77, with regard to any option for a subtraction from the game clock. The injury to B77 trumps the loss of the helmet by A22 with regard to the play clock, which will be set to 40 seconds, and both clocks will start on the referee’s signal (unless either team takes a charged team time out). Unless Team A is charged with a time out, A22 may not participate in the next down. B77 may not participate in the next down (regardless of any time outs taken by either team).

8. 2/5 @ B-30. Late in the game, A44 runs to the B-27 and is down inbounds. During the down A22’s helmet comes off (no helmet foul by the defense) and A45 goes down with an injury. When the clock is stopped it reads 0:58 in the fourth quarter. Team A has no timeouts remaining.
RULING:
A, 3/2, B-27, 0:58 (4), ready (40).
The loss of his helmet by A22 is counteracted by the injury to B77, with regard to any option for a subtraction from the game clock. The injury to B77 trumps the loss of the helmet by A22 with regard to the play clock, which will be set to 40 seconds, and both clocks will start on the referee’s signal (unless Team B takes a charged team time out). Since they have no time outs available, A22 will not be able participate in the next down. B77 may not participate in the next down (even if they take a charged team time out).

Well, it's official. I can't read. Geez.
2. I had 2nd period on the brain. No, dumb guy. Second HALF, which would be the 4th period (maybe it would be nice if they said 4th period). Game over.

8. The injury happened to A45 (not B77). I was mixing plays, apparently. Yeah, the 10SS is available, and would be most likely be accepted.

But, let's talk about 7. Where - oh where - does it say anywhere in the rules or AR's that a time out taken by the opponent will allow an injured player to re-enter the game (without staying out for one down)? Where did that come from?

That’s not what they’re saying.  Although they do phrase their answer a bit funny, so you might have misread it.  B is out for a play, due to his injury, no matter who calls timeout.  A can be “bought back in” from his helmet off if A calls a TO.

"B77 must leave the game for one play and unless Team A takes a charged timeout, A22 must leave the game for one play as well."

I have got to slow down and read better. I SWEAR I never saw the word "...and..." until just now. A correctly placed comma (after 'and') would have "fixed the glitch," as the Two Bobs would have said. (Bonus points for naming the movie.)
Whew. I'm not quite as stupid as I thought. An injured player may NOT participate in the next down. Period. End of story.
