Long way from the big time
« on: August 28, 2024, 04:08:57 PM »
8 bowl games, worked from Annapolis to Honolulu, Seattle to Charlotte. Here I was last Friday night (see attached photo). Where (you ask)? Well, let's just say there was little to block the view of the wide open, and mostly dirt fields (but a good amount of cotton, too). 6-player football. 3 team scrimmage. One team had 13 players; one had 10, and the other started with 7, and had one injury - down to 6. A long way from those other places I mentioned. But I was there. Did my job. Enjoyed helping some junior officials learn some helpful things. Just part of the deal. Still, can't help but chuckle a little.

The home players had a good time letting us know that aliens had been on their field.  ;)

Love this.

As much as some officials look down on six man football as not being 'real football,' it's pure. And fun.

Loved working 6 man when I was in the Panhandle.

First Varsity game I ever worked, first year in 1985 was Whitharrel, TX. Arrived plenty early and helped the coach clear the field of the livestock belonging to the 4H club before the game. An experience I will never forget.....A great game and a great time. 4 first year officials and we were all trying to figure out what we were doing. Both coaches had no complaint and it wasn't a blowout. What a way to start the season!!!

11 years earlier, my first varsity game was in —— Whitharral, Texas. Our dressing room was the coaches office. The players’ training ‘room’ was - literally - the tailgate of a pickup backed up to the door to their dressing room.
You may have attended on-field training at Coronado HS, led by yours truly. Hope it helped
