What? (Shaw-Blandino Quiz 5, question 1)
« on: August 13, 2026, 04:26:29 PM »
1. Free Kick @ A-35. A91’s kick is fielded at the goal line by B21 and he returns the ball back to the A-35. Time expires during Team A’s free kick at the end of the second quarter and A80 is offside on the kick.
RULING:

______________│______________│______________│______________

This is an incredibly poorly written question. It took about a dozen readings of this question for me to finally get some idea of what the question was intended to demonstrate. It sounded like two completely different play situations, the first 11 times I read it. Here is how this question should have been written:

1. Kickoff, A-35, 0:05 (2). B21 catches A91's legal place kick and returns the ball to the A-35, where he is tackled with the ball becoming dead. A80 was offside when the ball was kicked, and time in the period expired during the down.

Ruling:

A, kickoff, A-30, untimed down (25), OR B, 1/10, A-30, untimed down (25).

Team B may elect to enforce the 5-yard penalty for the offside foul at the previous spot and have the kickoff repeated in the extended period, OR have the penalty enforced at the spot where the dead-ball belongs to Team B at the end of the original kickoff down (A-35), taking the ball to the A-30, where Team B is (officially) awarded a scrimmage series in the extended period.
Team B will most likely have the penalty enforced at the dead-ball spot to continue play until a down free from an accepted penalty is played.

Team B can now try a Free Kick field goal play from the A-30.

How? This isn't a Fair Catch Kick situation since there was not a fair catch.
