2011 FOOTBALL OFFICIALS UNIFORM
JERSEY
NEW: 2-inch stripe
NEW: Position letter on left front pocket. Letter will be white against the black fitted within the stripe that runs down the pocket. NOTE: The pocket is NOT solid black!
NO CHANGE:
American Flag patch—above left pocket
CFO Patch—left sleeve
Position letter on back
PANTS
NEW: Full length black pants with 1-1/4 inch white stripe (last year was optional for cold-weather wear). To be worn in all games.
CAP
NO CHANGE:
REFEREE—Fitted solid white cap
ALL OTHERS—Fitted black cap with white piping
SHOES
NO CHANGE: Black shoes. Amount of white will vary with manufacturer but should be minimal.

What do they plan to do regarding shirts when they try out one or two High School guys to see if they are ready to move up a level - such as on Div III freshman college games?

Will they all still wear 1" or will they insist the prospects wear 2".
What position letters should these prospects buy?
How can they know what position they will eventually be hired to work?

My best reasonably experienced guess is that, for scrimmages, 1" stripes will be OK. As for actual games of competition, as they always have, they'll be expected to look the part, i.e., 2" stripes, with CFO logo, flag, and position letters on pocket and back. There are position letter "plackets" that can be sewn over the fixed position letters on the back - for certain. As for the pocket, I believe Honig's has indicated they will have a placket for that, too, althogh I'm not sure how that will work/look. It will have to have a black stripe in the center of it. For those that will work several positions in the same season, suck it up and buy a seaparate shirt for each position, and count your blessings. Besides, think how much you are saving on stockings.

The 'rationale' is exclusively to distinguish NCAA officials from any other level of game (i.e., NFL and interscholastic football). That's it. Of course, without copyrighting the uniforms, there is nothing to prevent other level from matching. So, this is may only be effective at 'separation' for a couple of years, until, and unless, interscholastic associations make the move (on which I'll bet my entire Monopoly fortune they will).

As with replay, like it or not, it's done. So, we accept it, and best to embrace it. Fighting it or whining about it will get you nowhere. Now, let's forget about uniforms and move on to bigger issues like BBW, substitution, new mechanics, etc.

I was looking for a light weight version (Honigs won't have one until June or July) and came across this.
This one seems to have a lot of features (flag pocket, adjustable waist); I don't know if Honig's will or not have these features.  Don't Just a
thought,

The only problem I see with these ones is that the legs are let out so you can "bulk up" under it.  May look a little big when we are in warm weather. 

The pants I got from Smitty's had a lot of room in the crotch (no jokes here).  Regardless of where I buy another pair, I will take them to a tailor.  Thanks for the link.

From what I have heard, El Macman hit the nail on the head.  The reason for the change was to make the college officiating uniform different from high school or the NFL.

There's no question that you'll need to have your pants tailored, and you'll want to pick a pretty accomplished tailor.  Our entire association bought the Gerry Davis pants last season, and the only sizing is based on waist size.  I expected to have to hem the pants, but I could have put both of my legs in one pants leg and still been able to run.  The crotch, butt, and legs all needed extensive tailoring which slightly more than doubled the cost of the pants.  As far as allowing a 2" waist adjustment goes (which make them look like tux pants) ; I work with an umpire who can adjust his waist more than that at breakfast.

And maybe, secondarily, it creates demand for a few organizations in a tight economy.  Dictate that the populace must purchase new attire and watch the cash flow improve for the suppliers.  Our cash flow takes a hit.  I wonder if Obama has any stimulus money for this!

Between the levels I will be working, I could work any of the deep three spots, and will also be working some referee. I don't think I want to by 4 SS and 4 LS shirts! I would be fine with buying a short and long for R, and a short and long for S, but to buy 4 more for a possible game or two at F or B is kind of silly. I'm sure they will have something to take care of the pocket also for guys who work multiple positions.

I imagine that they will have a sleeve of some sort similiar to a pocket protector that can slide over the top of the pocket with the different position letters.
