Carrying Over Personal Foul from 4th Qtr to Extra Period
« on: November 30, 2011, 08:38:37 AM »
Team B are leading by 8 points near the end of the 4th quarter. Team A score a touchdown during a down in which time expires. Team A attempt a successful 2-point-conversion on the Try Down. During the try down, Team B commit a Face-mask foul.

Can this penalty carry over to the ensuing extra period?

8-3-3-b-1 (Fouls by Team B on a try) states:
Quote
Team A shall have the option of declining the score and repeating the try after enforcement, or declining the penalty(ies) and accepting the score. Team A may accept the score with penalties for personal fouls enforced on the succeeding kickoff or from the succeeding spot in extra periods.

I can't find anything which specifies whether the Try must take place in an Extra Period, or just the succeeding spot must be in an extra period.
I could agree with either interpretation.

If the TD occurred in the 4th quarter, the try is always part of the 4th quarter. In your play, A has three options: decline the penalty and take the result of the play (successful try); accept the penalty, half the distance, and retry (dumb); accept the penalty and enforce it from the succeeding spot (OT, whether A ends up on offense or defense).

You've already cited the correct rule.

During the try down, Team B commit a Face-mask penalty.

Not trying to be personal ...
If  your mother got caught running a red light, would you say she committed a fine?
In a basketball game, if a defender hacks the arm of the shooter, do we say that he commits a pair of free throws?

Would it not be better to conform with NCAA jargon and say, "Team B commit a Face-mask foul."?

Easy there "Devil". BenG is probably not familiar with "american" terminology. He is probably more familiar with the terminology in British sports parlance. Your point is well taken re. fouls and penalties - but be gentle. ;D.

I can't see it being gentler.

Gentle!!
There is nothing gentle about FOOTBALL.  >:D
Besides, we don't want BenG to talk like an American TV commontater.

I can assure you that Ben will never sound like one of Them, not even if he moved to Tuscaloosa tomorrow and stayed for 50 years.

I think on that side of the pond a penalty usually involves a round ball, a kicker and a keeper. Oh and a bunch of unhappy defencemen! :D

You're quite correct - I meant to say "Team B commit a Face-mask foul."

It's not a difference in British/American Terminology - I've just been watching too much Football on TV!
