First Real Injury
« on: October 07, 2012, 12:58:45 PM »
I experienced my first, had to leave the game, injury last night in 25 years.

Compound dislocation of right index finger. Got it caught in a face mask trying to protect myself during my game last night . Looked like a chicken bone sticking out :) Luckily the Texas A&M-Kingsville team doctor who treated me on the field was an orthopedic surgeon. He called his partner, a hand surgeon, and he met me at the hospital to clean and suture. Spent a couple hours in ER in Corpus… really top notch care down there and very nice, caring professionals. Thanks to my crew for waiting for me and not leaving me down there. Just got my antibiotics and pain meds from CVS…life will be better now :)

Get well soon Bolt.  Sounds gross.  Being a Texas guy, I figured you just took a slug of Red Eye and popped it back in yourself :-X

Only time I ever got a finger hung in a mask like that I grabbed the kid's shoulder pad collar and told him not to move until I said so.  Fortunately for me, he listened.

So did you flag yourself for a 5 yard or a 15 yard facemask?
Hope you are feeling better soon.

The crew made him sit out a play because his lid came off.

I feel your pain.  I'm recuperating from ACL surgery.  Laying on the couch on the weekend with college and NFL football...not such a bad thing.  During the week with daytime TV...NO GOOD!

Hope you feel better.

Cripes, stick a bandaid on it.  What do you need a finger for anyway? LOL

I hear ya, I felt a bit like a wuss leaving.  This photo was taken at the hospital after the bone was reinserted/seated back to where it belongs.  On the field it was dislocated and protruding through the torn skin.  Didn't hurt (Umpires are tough that way) but Doc was very concerned about contamination and infection and wanted IV antibiotics started immediately and the tear thoroughly cleaned out and closed.

Rub some dirt on it, tape it up and get back out there.  :P

I used to get fingers stuck in facemasks all the time when I played and that always hurt like the dickens. To quote Bubba, "I feel your pain."
