There was a kickoff in which the kicking team committed a facemask foul on the B ball carrier during the return. There was also a holding foul on the receiving team, but I don't know when it occurred. They repeated the kickoff, which may have been 'by rule' if the holding foul was before the kick was caught by the B receiver. However, if the holding was after the catch, that would have been a "clean hands" situation, and B could have kept the ball by declining the FMM, and A would have then accepted the OH penalty. But B could have accepted offsetting fouls, and repeated the kickoff. Watching the R, I never got a sense that he actually got an option from Team B. None of the rest of the crew seemed to be checking with the B coach as well.
The R announced offsetting fouls, and the kickoff would be repeated. Then it looked like the teams were getting ready to play a scrimmage down. Then the R re-announced that the kickoff would be repeated.
The R has a great voice and did a fine job with his announcements, but it would have been nice to have heard something like, "There were fouls by both teams. During the kick, holding number XX, receiving team. Facemask, number XX, kicking team. By rule, the fouls offset; repeat the kickoff."
Or, "There were fouls by both teams. During the return, holding number XX, receiving team. Facemask, number XX, kicking team. State U (team B) has elected offsetting fouls; repeat the kickoff."
If that is what happened.
If the hold was post-possesion, I hope the crew gave B the "clean hands" option.
