In The 3rd Overtime.............
« on: April 29, 2015, 12:14:50 AM »
In the 3rd overtime, teams must "Go For 2" after scoring a touchdown. OK, but what if they don't?

If the team lines up to kick the extra point, I don't think you can blow it dead, because there's always the possibility (absurd as it may be) of a fake. So then what happens if they follow through and kick the extra point? I would think it's simply a LEGAL play but that it cannnot score a point even if the kick is good.

Or is it a foul that would (assuming the kick is good) cause the down to be replayed after a penalty is applied? But then what happens if B refuses the penalty? Would a foul by B cause the down to be replayed?

If A has designed a fake on the play, can the holder posess the ball with his knee on the ground, since no kick is actually anticipated? Does running into the kicker apply since no kick was anticipated?

I would assume that a 1 point saftey would still be a possibility on the 2 point conversion try.  Therefore it would be possible to win by 1 point in tripple overtime.

How is the rule actually worded in NF? In NCAA, this case has been taken care of:

"Beginning with the third extra period, teams scoring a touchdown must attempt a two-point try. Although not illegal, a one-point try attempt by Team A will not score a point."

In the NFHS, in the 3rd overtime, a one point try will score 1 point; however, a two point try will score 2 points. tiphat:

There's your problem right there.  There is no such rule in the NFHS Suggested overtime rules, so there is no MFHS interp.  However, many states modify the NFHS procedure.  For example, in Georgia, we start on the 15, not the 10, and you can get a first down without scoring.

If the state has put in the "must go for 2 in the 3rd overtime" rule, then the state needs to come up with the answer to your question.  I would think the easiest thing would be to use the NCAA interp: go for one if you want, it just won't count for any points.

And yes, there could still be roughing the kicker, as it's a legal kick, it just won't be worth any points.

Not if the state uses the procedure as written in the rule book (see page 83/2014 NFHS Football Rules). Now if your state has amended those rules, the answer to your question will be found in their amended version.
"Gentlemen, we are going to relentlessly chase perfection, knowing full well we will not catch it, because nothing is perfect. But we are going to relentlessly chase it, because in the process we will catch excellence. I am not remotely interested in just being good."
