Block in the back
« on: October 15, 2018, 03:46:31 PM »
Is there a difference in a block in the back downfield and a block in the back from a team a WR, outside the tackle box at the snap, and coming back towards the original position of the ball and hitting a team B player from the (a) back or (b) in the side? Or is this just a block in the back.  Both blocks are above the waist.

A block in the back is in the back.  There is no difference in the two areas of the field you mentioned.  If clearly in the back it would be a foul.  This is one where we need to see the entire approach.  If you turn and just catch the contact that is not enough to flag because there is a chance that the player being blocked turned into it.  What I look for is a player in chase mode.  He is approaching from behind and blocks in the back.  If he is approaching from the side it will be nearly impossible to have a block in the back.  A block in the side is not a block in the back so that is a legal block assuming it isn't targeting or some other personal foul but it will not be a block in the back foul.
