Low block?
« on: April 17, 2015, 01:32:34 PM »
I was rewatching the end of the Boise State / Oklahoma Fiesta Bowl from 2007, and noticed something on Oklahoma's overtime play (they did only have the one) -- it's queued up here.

Watch the slot receiver on the bottom of the screen (#9) -- blocking below the waist? I keep going back and forth, partially because it's not great video (and that's probably a good reason not to throw the flag here). The replays are a little better and from different angles, and one tells me "Yes" and one tells me "No".

Opinions? Would you call this in a high school game?

1st view - Absolutely.
2nd view - Not sure.  He may have started above the waist and slid down.
3rd view - Yeah, I think so.

In a NFHS game, the blocker would likely have made a legal block, since there was no reason to cut the defender.  A mere shield block would have accomplished the same result.

When there's doubt, let it pass. Looking for Fly droppings in black pepper, causes far more problems than it corrects.

Exactly my thoughts on the replays too.

Agreed, which is why I would hold my flag on that play -- given the quality of the video, especially, making it hard to tell for sure.

Under NFHS rules this is likely a low block. Don't split hairs on this for safety reasons. He's trying to cut the defender.

Under NCAA rules, this is has not been a foul under any variation of the low block rules we've had the past 5-6 years.
