Declining Distance
« on: October 04, 2011, 11:52:51 AM »
Is it legal for the team making the choice on penalty choices to decline the distance on a penalty???

Happened like this...live ball foul on the defense on a PAT. Kick was missed......penalty accepted to get the opportunity to replay the un-timed down. Also wanted the ball left at the 3 yard line.

OK   ???????

Yep, it's OK.

10-1-1 "The distance penalty for any foul may be declined."

Your sitch is where we normally see this happen, since many kickers are more comfortable from their normal distance.  I always ask the kicker "You want to leave it here, or move it up?"

I was told by an official this season, Coach you can't just decline the yardage. I said check your rules book and get back to me on that one.

Never heard from him.  ^no
