How do you rule on this play !!!
« on: September 05, 2023, 01:48:32 PM »
A87 breaks for a long run. During the run A65 starts taunting B76 at the original line of scrimmage. Just as A87 crosses the goal line to score a touchdown B22 grabs him at the back of his collar and yanks him to the ground backwards. How do you officiate this?

Touchdown or Not?

What fouls -- Deadball or Liveball

Where are these fouls enforced from?

1.  The taunt is an UNS foul and enforced as a DB foul.  On the try or on the subsequent KO.
2.  The horsecollar foul is a live ball personal foul unless the covering official rules that the TD was scored first.  If LB on the try, if DB option to the scoring team try or subsequent KO.  If both DB that could be 30 yards total.

Taunting may occur during a live ball, but is treated as a dead ball foul = succeeding spot (Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names can never hurt me). B22's personal foul was also a dead ball foul, allowing both fouls enforced on PAT, KO, or one on each. IF you ruled B22's PF OCCURRED prior to the TD, the enforcement spot would be from the spot of the foul unless it occurred behind LOS.

The live ball foul could also be assessed on the subsequent kickoff. (8-2-2)

Whether B22's foul is deemed a live or dead ball foul, wouldn't A have the option to enforce on the try or subsequent kickoff?

Also, since A's foul occurred first, would B need to declare how they want A's foul enforced (try or sub k/o) and then A would declare how they want B's foul enforced?

So to get on a really minor technicality, the horse collar foul is a live ball foul only. You can't "tackle" a player in possession of a dead ball. You can rule that it was a dead ball personal foul for unnecessary roughness and enforce it the same, however, and nobody would ever know the difference.

If you rule the touchdown was scored first, then both teams have committed unsportsmanlike or dead ball personal fouls during the same dead ball period, and the distance penalties offset. (10-2-5b)

I think people are glossing over who committed which foul here -- A taunts, B horse collars. You're never going to walk off 30 yards of penalties in one direction in this scenario.
