2022 S/B Quiz 4
« on: September 22, 2022, 09:29:28 PM »
Not 100% confident on one of these. I bet you'll find it.

1. 3/G @ B-6. Runner A21 takes the handoff and circles right end and drives for the pylon. As A21 approaches the pylon, he gets both feet inside the pylon but the ball is in his right hand and it crosses the boundary at the 1⁄2 yard line. The runner’s stride starts from the field of play and his left foot touches just out of bounds inside the corner of the end zone. The right foot last touched in the field of play and was still airborne when the left foot touched down. The ball is breaking the plane of the goal line extended when A21’s left foot comes down.
RULING:
4/G, B-1/2, ready (40 and running).
The BC is afforded the GL extended ONLY if he touches the pylon or touches the ground in the end zone before he is out of bounds. In this case, he touches the ground out of bounds before touching the pylon or ground in the end zone. Thus, Team B A gets the ball where it crossed the sideline, which is the B-1/2 yard line.
Please excuse the typographical error.

2. 2/10 @ B-25. With the score tied during the second possession series of the 2nd extra period, B21 intercepts A12’s legal forward pass at the B-10 and carries the ball back across Team A’s goal line. During the run, B79 blocks A80 below the waist at midfield.
RULING:
Extra Period Number 3, 25 3 yard line, no clock (25).
By rule, because the scoring team fouled after the COP, the score is canceled, the penalty is declined, and the possession series is ended. Since this was the second series of the extra period, the extra period is over. And, since the score remains tied, the game advances to the third extra period.

3. 2/10 @ B-25. With the score tied during the second possession series of the 2nd extra period, B21 intercepts A12’s legal forward pass at the B-10 and carries the ball back across Team A’s goal line. During the run, B79 attacks and blocks A80 from the blindside with Targeting at midfield.
RULING:
Extra Period Number 3, 40 yard line/12 ½ yard line 18 yard line or 1 1/2 yard line, no clock (25).
By rule, because the scoring team fouled after the COP, the score is canceled and the possession series is ended. Since this was the second series of the extra period, the extra period is over. And, since the score remains tied, the game advances to the third extra period.
The flagrant personal foul for targeting is penalized at the succeeding spot in the next extra period.

4. 2/7 @ A-25. Team A is ahead in the score late in the second quarter. Ball carrier A22 gains nine yards and is tackled in the field of play, and the game clock is stopped at 1:47. The umpire reports to the referee that he has a flag for holding by snapper A55 at the A-27.
RULING:
A, 2/15, A-17, snap (25).
The 10-yard penalty for the holding foul is penalized at the spot of the foul (3 & 1 with end of run as the Basic Spot). Team B has the option to start the game clock on the snap, instead of the ready.

5. After a Touchdown and successful 2 point try, Team A trails 24 – 22 with 0:55 left in the 4th quarter. Team A intends to try an on-side free kick from the A-35. Kicker A90 holds the ball as if he will attempt a drop kick. A90 then tosses the ball up in the air and the ball bounces just behind Team A’s restraining line and then A90 kicks the ball after it bounces several feet into the air. The kick is recovered by A44 at the A-47.
RULING:
A, kickoff, A-30, 0:55 (2), free kick rules (25).
The kick by A90 is an illegal kick and the ball does NOT become alive. The 5-yard penalty is enforced at the succeeding spot, taking the ball to the A-30. The game clock should not have run, and should still be 0:55 for the next down.

6. 1/10 @ A-35. Receiver A88 is near the sideline, stretching to catch A12’s legal forward pass. As A88 is going to the ground in the act of catching the pass, A88 gains firm control of the ball with the toes down in bounds and falls out of bounds, maintaining firm control at the B-45. The clock reads 1:44 after the play.
RULING:
A, 1/10, B-45, 1:44 (?), ready/snap (40 and running).
A88 successfully completes the catch, and the ball is dead out of bounds. We aren’t told in which period this action takes place, but, if 1st or 3rd, the game clock starts on the referee’s signal (ready). If 2nd or 4th periods, the game clock will start on the snap.

7. 1/10 @ A-35. Receiver A88 is near the sideline, stretching to catch A12’s legal forward pass. As A88 is going to the ground in the act of catching the pass, A88 gains firm control of the ball with toes down in bounds, bobbles the ball while airborne, regains firm control before landing out of bounds and maintains firm control when landing at the B-45. The clock reads 1:44 after the play.
RULING:
A, 2/10, A-35, 1:44 (?), snap (40 and running).
The pass is incomplete, because A88 does not gain and maintain firm control of the ball while inbounds. By rule, the game clock starts on the snap (regardless of time remaining in any period).

8. 1/10 @ A-35. Receiver A88 is near the sideline, stretching to catch A12’s legal forward pass. As A88 is going to the ground in the act of catching the pass, A88 gains firm control of the ball with toes down in bounds, falls out of bounds and loses firm control of the ball when contacting the ground at the B-45. The clock reads 1:44 after the play.
RULING:
A, 2/10, A-35, 1:44 (?), snap (40and running).
The pass is incomplete, because A88 does not gain and maintain firm control of the ball while inbounds. By rule, the game clock starts on the snap (regardless of time remaining in any period).

I agree apart from 2 and 3. As it will be the 3rd overtime period, the next play will be a 2-point try (relocated after enforcement of the penalty in 3, so 1 1/2 or 18).

#5 was on one of the training tapes, I think in 2020. #1 is the first play on this week's training tape.

#5 actually happened in 2020, and they issued a very quick interpretation to nip this in the bud. Some folks wanted to argue that this was a drop kick. Ha. Wrong, bucko. Then the A.R. was included the next year.

Minor edit to the answer to #1

Quote
Thus, Team B gets the ball where it crossed the sideline, which is the B-1/2 yard line.

As the answer previously indicated, its Team A's ball.

Fixed it. Sorry for the typographical error. Thank you.
