 From a post-game discussion ..

The QB takes the snap and is scrambling, under pressure he does not get outside the free blocking zone, and his receiver is 20 yards beyond the LS, he throws a pass that was judged would be short of the LS and appeared it would have gone out of bounds but short of the LS, however the defensive end reads the play rushing and knocks the ball to (A) to the ground or (b) out of bounds      was thrown for Intentional grounding.    Just an incomplete pass or in fact an Intentional grounding. Thoughts?

If a defender knocks the pass down, how would one know where it was going to wind up?  How would you know it was going to be short of the LOS

I'm not flagging that.

I would say incomplete pass. If the defender intercepted the ball, we wouldn’t flag for intentional grounding, so why would we in those circumstances.

HlinNC, I don't disagree, and I don't think I would have flagged it either- not passing judgment, but this happened so I was reading the rule book trying to determine if someone had an interpretation based on a rule.

I'd agree, when a pass is clearly blocked/tipped by the defense a grounding call is out the window.

Were all the requirements for "dumping the ball" met?

My understanding was that if all the requirements were not met it is a foul.

Pass tipped by the defense can't be IG according to our guidance.  We cannot assume where it would have ended up.

An untouched pass dumped at the feet of ineligible recievers is an 'either-or'. If the Bubbas were beyond the LOS = IR, if the Bubbas were behind the LOS = IG.

We're giving a tip signal, calling it incomplete, and getting a football down. Once it's tipped at the line, I'm no longer even thinking about IG.
