To bag or not to bag on a free kick?
« on: August 28, 2014, 12:15:01 PM »
K1 begins the half with a legal free kick which travels in the air beyond R's restraining line and:
A. prior to the kick hitting the ground it is touched by K2
B. after hitting the ground it is touched by K2

Does the covering official beanbag either? Thanks

(i used the search function but was unable to find any topic covering this question)

A. No bag, but you have a flag for Kick Catching Interference
B. No bag.  Legal play, not first touching.  No reason for a bag.

A.  Flag for Kick Catching Interference 6-5-6a.  Bean bag not necessary.

B.  Bean bag not necessary because touching by K2 is legal and the spot where he touched it is irrelevant.

Thank you. I am a 1st year official and my mentor told me to throw my bag on both. It seemed pretty black letter rule that to be 1st touching on a free kick it must be inside R's restraining line. He was hearing nothing of it.
( I believe he was confusing scrimmage and free kicks but it is one of those lessons new guys get to learn. Smile, say OK and go ask someone else I guess.)

And make sure to start the clock on K2's touch in situation B - since K can legally possess at that point, it's a legal touch.

Thanks for the welcome and the info. I would have forgot to start the clock but would have been signalling to stop it upon the recovery.  Unwritten football fundamental, no clock can be stopped unless it is first started.
