S-B Quiz 2023-06

I may be rusty, but I don't think so. Can't emphasize any text, right now, though.

S-B Quiz 2023-06

1. 3/5 @ B-15. Ball carrier A22 is tackled hard by B44 at the B-5, resulting in first and goal. After the ball is dead, A22 gets up and drives his forearm hard into the face of B44.
RULING:
A, 1/10, B-20, ready (25).
For dead-ball fouls before the ball is ready for the play for the succeeding down, the line-to-gain is established after all such fouls have been completed.

2. Free Kick @ A-35. Late in the game with the kicking team trailing by 2 points, they set up for an on-side kick. The kicking team has 6 players to the left of the kicker and 4 to the right of the kicker. Kicker A90 is lined up to kick the ball to the left side of the formation and as A90 approaches the ball he abruptly stops but the kicking team players to the left of the kicker continue and cross their restraining line. These players stop and then retreat back across their restraining line and A90 quickly turns and kicks the ball back to the right side of the formation with all players for Team A now back behind their restraining line.
RULING:
A, kickoff, A-30, free kick timing (25).
Illegal kick, dead-ball foul (per NCAA interpretation for 2022).

3. 4/10 @ B-20. While A12 is holding the ball for a field goal attempt at the B-27, B40 rushes off the corner and plays the ball by batting it from A12?s hands. The ball is recovered by B55 at the B-30.
RULING:
B, 1/10, B-30, snap (25).
The batting of the ball in possession of a player (causing it to become loose) is, by rule, considered a fumble, and the recovery by B55 is legal, with Team B being awarded a series at the spot of the recovery (on the assumption that B55 was ?down? when he recovered the ball).

4. Free Kick @ A-35. A90 executes an on-side kick toward the sideline, and A33 is running near the sideline and steps out of bounds at the A-45. A33 leaps from out of bounds, and while airborne at the A-47, bats the ball, and it rolls forward where A88 recovers at the A-49.
RULING:
B, 1/10, A-42. Touching of the ball from a legal free kick by an out of bounds player makes the ball dead when, and where, touched. Since this touching also occurred before Team B touched the ball, this is a foul for an illegal kick out of bounds by Team A. Team B can elect to have the kickoff repeated at the A-30, or take possession of the ball, with a scrimmage series, 5-yards from the spot where the ball was declared out of bounds (A-47), taking the ball to the A-42. Team B will most likely accept possession of the ball at the A-42. (Team B would not accept the other available option of taking possession of the ball 30-yards beyond the previous spot (B-35)).

5. 4/12 @ A-35. Team A is in scrimmage kick formation. Just after the snap, lineman B77 grabs guard A66 and pulls him to one side, allowing linebacker B43 to shoot the gap to try to block the kick. B44 catches the kick at the B-25 and returns to the B-40 where he is tackled.
RULING:
A, 1/10, A-45, snap (25).
The ?pull-and-shoot? holding foul by B77 occurred before the ball was kicked, thus, the Basic Spot spot is the previous spot. Since the spot of the foul is, essentially, at the previous spot, per 3 & 1, the previous spot is the enforcement spot. The distance penalty is 10-yards, and the penalty includes a first down for Team A. (Suggestion to Team B: Don?t do this.)

6. 4/10 @ A-35. A90?s punt is blocked, and the ball never crosses the neutral zone. A44 recovers while down at the A-30. B21 blocks gunner A80 below the waist at the A-45 while the ball was loose behind the line.
RULING:
A, 1/10, 50, snap (25).
Because the legally kicked ball failed to cross the NZ, PSK does not apply. The Basic Spot is the previous spot, and, per 3 & 1, the 15-yard penalty is enforced from the previous spot, and includes a first down.

7. 2/10 @ B-25. Late in the 2nd quarter, B21 holds A80 at the B-10 during A44?s touchdown run. A44 spikes the ball in the end zone after the score.
RULING:
A, try, B-18, no clock (25), OR A, try, B-3, no clock (25), with succeeding K/O at A-20, F/K timing (25); record 1 UNS on A44.
The live-ball 10-yard holding foul by B21 is declined by rule (due to the touchdown). The 15-yard UNS foul by A44 may be enforced either on the Try or at the succeeding kickoff. A44 is charged with a UNS foul on his UNS counter. If this is A44?s second UNS foul of the game, he is ejected.

8. Try @ B-3. During the successful kick try, B54 is offside. After the ball is dead, B55 commits a personal foul.
RULING:
A, repeat the Try, B-3/4-yard line, no clock (25), OR, score 1-point for A, then A, kickoff, 50.
Team A can refuse the successful 1-point try, and have B54?s offside penalty enforced one half the distance to the goal, and B55?s dead-ball UNR penalized a further one half the distance to the goal, taking the ball to the B-3/4-yard line, and repeat the try down. More likely, Team A will decline B54?s offside penalty, and score 1-point for the successful field goal on the try, and then have B55?s 15-yard UNR penalty enforced on the succeeding kickoff.

Just a minor typo fix: I guess in #4 you mean B 1/10 (I think the normal answer style keeps A and B the same "during" the entire question even though after the RFP the designations do reverse).

Yes, sir, a typo. I will correct immediately. B, 1/10, A-42.
Thank you. Hope your weather is a bit cooler than ours. 100+ most for nearly two months, now. But, we can still do things in hot weather. In cold weather, we get burst pipes, slick roads and lots of wrecks, and occasional school closings. I?ll take 100 every day to avoid 20.

And the question marks at Pull and Shoot are supposed to be quotation marks. No sure why they are appearing as question marks.
