Season already over…

Well, my 39th season did not last very long. We are short of officials, so I worked Thursday night with my regular crew (I’m the WH).
Friday night I was filling in at U for another crew and in the 1st quarter, a running back cut back against the grain and there I was, with nowhere to go. The pile gobbled me up and I ended up with my left ankle broken in 3 places.
In a cast till after Labor Day, then surgery.

Bummer.  Hopefully you will heal quickly and the rehab goes well.

See if you can help out and grade film or go evaluate once you are able to move around a little more.
Some time ago our area's chief mentor, who was a retired Power 5 D1 CFO, had returned to calling at the D1AA-FCS level.  He injured a quad early that Sept. and was knocked out for the season.  He would call me every week to find out where I was going and hitch a ride to evaluate the crew.

When I tore the meniscus in my left knee 4 years ago, I took some clock assignments to stay active.

Sorry to hear,Delta, the U position always seems to be the one most injury prone. Wishing you a speedy recovery and try to stay active in the game from the sidelines. When returning, you might want to consider moving to R... it's much easier watching players running away from you than at you!

I missed all of last season with a non-football injury.  Keep the faith, rehab, and come back next year.

I have been the R for about 30 years. I was at U just to help out. I worked U in JUCO from 2008-12. Never got injured. Go figure. 🤷🏻‍♂️

In Oklahoma we have moved the U to the offense backfield mainly for this reason. Safety for that position.Is it ideal, arguments abound as to what you are missing and the extra duties to the other positions.  It is not mandatory but "highly recommended"we use this mechanic change.  Praying for a quick healing.  I am suffering thru a Peroneal tear on the Brevis tendon in my right ankle and have surgery scheduled for Dec 1 after the season.  Just brace it up heavily, take 800mg Advil and run with a slight limp.

Sorry to hear about your injury. I ended up with a tibial plateau fracture a couple years ago.
