Umpire in Backfield
« on: November 26, 2017, 01:59:40 PM »
Watched some of the USD-Nichols State game yesterday. I believe they had a SWAC crew. The U worked most of the game in the offensive backfield. He was in his traditional spot on tries and FGs but otherwise lined up on the offensive side. Is this an experiment being done by the SWAC. I wonder if they had to get permission to do that in their playoff assignment.

Yes, the SWAC has been using this for two years now, I believe. I'm pretty sure they started when the FBS conferences all went to all 8 man crews. I'm not sure about permission in playoff games. I'm not sure how much longer you can call it an experiment, but that's what it was called when it was approved.
