Numbering Restriction
« on: October 01, 2023, 11:26:03 AM »
I know that Players wearing numbers 50-79 are generally ineligible to be receivers but is there any restriction on passers? Other than being positioned behind the line of scrimmage when they release the ball, or in other words, they should not have crossed the line of scrimmage before attempting the pass.

In short, can any team A player throw a legal forward pass?

Yes, any player can throw a legal forward pass. Eligibility only applies to receivers of passes.

Players wearing numbers 50-79 are generally ineligible

FTFY. There's no need for unnecessary adjectives there. They cannot "report as eligible" in Fed like in other codes.

OK, sorry about the superfluous adjective-- was running through it all in my head and didn't come up with an exception but sometimes I miss one.. but to follow up then...  "A" numbered 65, may throw a pass but is ineligible to catch a pass, right?

Case Book -- Page 86 - 7.5.13 situation B  -- Lineman becomes eligible -- A1's forward pass is defected by B1 and then caught by interior lineman - Ruling : No foul has occurred as A2 became an eligible receiver after B1 touched the pass

An ineligible number can be a back and thus can do everything a back can do, except catch a forward pass.
