AB's Team Wins
« on: December 11, 2015, 09:49:42 PM »
FYI...

Westminster High (where AB coaches) won the Georgia Class 3A  State Championship this afternoon in OT -  with one of the wildest finishes you could imagine.

Down two TDs with about 4 minutes to go, Westminster scored, recovered an onside kick, scored again, then scored first in OT.  Then on a 4th/goal for their opponents, recovered a fumble - which occurred at the 1/2 yard line - in the EZ for a TB.

I hope the coaching staff all took their heart meds!

recovered an onside kick

Oh God, now he'll never shut up!

Congrats AB! Had a basketball game tonight (my football season ended with a semi-final last week) and was bummed I couldn't watch.

Thanks, guys.  It was exciting, down by 14 with 4 minutes to play, and won it in OT.

And yes, I was proud of our special teams play:

6 kickoffs, 6 touchbacks
3 for 3 on FG - 21, 32 and 53 yards
1 onside kick - recovered
3 punts - avg 61.7 yards (net 55 yds per punt as one was a TB)

I really thought we were going to get the free kick after a fair catch when they lined up to punt at the end there. Was that a consideration at the time?

I hope there are some colleges looking at these kickers.  That's awesome!

Congrats, AB!

Absolutely.  Not saying it WOULD have happened, but it was briefly discussed.  Had the clock been even lower, it probably would have happened. (9 seconds left when the punt ended).  But the punt went OOB at the A41, which would have been a 69 yard FG.  My kicker is good, but that's REALLY a stretch.

But can you imagine a state championship ending on a free kick after a fair catch?  Wow.

And to carol1995, yes, he's committed to Penn State.  The Penn State Special Teams coach has been at our last two games (including this one), showing support and making sure he's going to stay committed.  Heard he was tweeting during the game.

Is your punter & place kicker one in the same?

Did the officials check the kicking balls before the game?   nAnA

This year, yes.  Last year, he was just the punter.  But my senior kicker graduated, so he took over both.

Looks like next year I will be back to separate kicker and punter, unless one of them really surprises me between now and then.
