Drop Kicks

Drop kicks in six man are a relatively rare occurrence, but they do happen.

2-16-3:   A drop kick is a kick by a player who drops the ball and kicks it as it touches the ground.

Are these legal drop kicks? I have an opinion but want to see what others think.

Did he send that to you or did you get it from another official.  They are not common but do happen and freak you out the first time you see that in a game if you didn't seem them practice kicking.

Pulled from a six man site.  I've actually had one before a few years ago; my question was if the kick was simultaneous with the ground; at least one looks there is a definite pause; just wanted to see what others thought.

Once had an 8th grader make a drop kick in a 6 man sub varsity game!

I would not nitpick on the language "as it touches the ground" - if it is an obvious drop kick attempt and not just a really badly mistimed punt, I'd make it legal. The ones on the video look fine to me.

Were you questioning the legality of using a drop kick to put the ball in play on free kick? Or, were you questioning the legality of the kick, itself? JBall provided the answer for the use of a drop kick on a free kick. Kalle and I both agree that the actual kick is legal. In ALL of those video examples, I did not see a significant rise of the ball from the ground before it was kicked.  All good.

I agree not that I am normally the one watching it as long as it's not bouncing twice I would try to make it legal.

We also DON"T want this....Back around 2000-2003 I was on the Editorial Committee. We handled challanging/stupid questions that came from around our Nation. This one came.....

(1) Hans tee's up the ball so that it will topple off tee;
(2) Hans picks up the ball and asks Lefty, while pitching the ball to him. to hold it on the tee;
(3) A Hans repaces his steps, Lefty spins around and drop kicks the free kick ;
(4) R players watch as K recovers the onside kick.

COACH : "LEGAL ,HUH, JUST LIKE A QUICK SNAP  !."
ESPONSE: "Sounds more like the unfair act, 'actions or verbage designed to confuse the opponents into believe there is a problem with a spap or kick  isn't imminent is beyond sportsmenship. The kick would be dead and repeated from K'25."

Coach was concerned that Hans had been practicing teeing the ball so it would fall off all summer.It was suggested that he introduced Hans to America

Clever if only coaches would put this much time and effort into learning the rules and coaching their players up.  They all want to be cute instead learn the game teach the game play the game.

Doug Flutie did a drop kick extra point for the Patriots in his last pro game.  I think it was the 2005 season.

In NCAA nowadays we have it easy, this would be a simple 6-1-2-a foul, five yards, ball remains dead.
