Punt Play - Rugby Style Kicker
« on: November 04, 2023, 12:45:21 PM »
How much protection does a rugby style kicker get when in a 4th down scrimmage kick formation and his regular "kicking style" is to roll out 5-8 yards to his right then kicking the ball on the run.  What if any rule and/or case play references specifically cover this?

Never let the Rules Book get in the way of a great ball game!

When his foot hits the ball he is a kicker and should be afforded reasonable protection from that time on.  Just like roughing the passer.

A rule of  :thumbup that we use is:
IF B  IS TRYING TO TACKLE THE  SCRAMBLING POTENTIAL KICKER, B THINKS HE'S A RUNNER =  ^no

IF B IS TRYING TO BLOCK THE KICK & CONTACTS KICKER W/O TOUCHING THE BALL =  ^flag

I like that as a rule of thumb.
