non qb throw a pass
« on: December 23, 2010, 06:50:30 PM »
The other night in some bowl game the qb dropped back to pass.  Defender from the blind side swatted the ball out of his hand.  O lineman picked up the ball and tried to run with it, but it was about a six yard loss.  Could that lineman have thrown the ball out of bounds for incomplete pass?

also, play starts in middle of field.  end around play the qb tosses the ball to deep back and he runs left.  deep back flips ball to wide out running back to the middle of the filed and is obviously not going to get away from the defenders can he chuck it out of bounds for incomplete pass?

Any player who throws a legal forward pass becomes a passer.  Your plays are legal plays.  The player who throws the legal forward pass is then protected from being roughed.  That same player who throws the pass must ensure he doesn't throw the ball away illegally (intentional grounding)

also in play 2, Team A would likely be on the hook for ineligible receiver downfield (assuming it was a designed run play).

The tackle box is no longer in effect on both of these plays...right?  So, in these scenarios, as long as the ball goes across the line of scrimmage it's all good...correct?

even if they do take on intentional grounding penalty it is still better is it not?

Lets say it is 2nd and long on play #1.  if they take the loss it will be 3rd down and longer.  But if they get a flag for intentional grounding then they have 3rd and original distance...correct?

intentional grounding is spot foul + loss of down.  no benefit for them--it'd be the same as if they got sacked. 3rd and longer.

One the ball leaves the tackle box it vanishes.

The penalty for intentional grounding is a loss of down at the spot of the foul, so then add the yardage from the spot of the pass to the original distance.  For instance if it was originally 10 yards for a first,  The illegal pass is thrown 5 yards behind the line of scrimmage.  The next down would yield 15 yards for a first down.

Keep in mind, that if someone, other than the QB, ends up with the ball, there is serious doubt as to whether a pass will or will not be thrown.  I say this only to encourage that, although he is afforded protection if he becomes a passer, to consider if he has the full range of protection a QB in the pocket would have.
Would you still call it 'that' close.....
