I really hope NFHS and Georgia adopt the new shirt next year. I really like it.

Our association just 'allowed' the black pants to be used as an option in lieu of knickers so I can honestly say that I foresee the 2" shirts within 2 years. Looks much better IMHO.

To be honest, I'd also like to see high school officiating adopt the position on the shirt. I think it looks very professional

Haha I do agree with the more stuff to buy. I'm glad I don't do this for the money. I just really enjoy looking professional on the field

NO NO NO NO NO!

There's already enough of a racket going on the officiating supply business without "requiring" a new shirt.
The black pant thing hasn't even worn out yet.

I'm gonna take a big wild guess here: you work in an association that uses fixed crews, right?

I really don't care if we have one inch or two inch stripes, what we need is better material. The polyester shirts are crap.

There have already been newer, lighter materials used.  I know Honig's came out with one 2-3 years ago.
I got one of these: http://www.theofficialschoice.com/footballshirt-shortsleeve-5.aspx
a couple of years ago.  Its very lightweight and its marked down to $10!

Do yourself a favor and try out the Ultimate Referee shirt from Ump-Attire. Best shirt I've worn yet.

I would be ok with the 2" stripes but not position placards. I am not on a crew and fill in at a lot of different positions. I've also started white hatting 6-Man varsity games so the last thing I need is a closet full of shirts for each position I might work.

WELPE, the care instructions say to wash cold and hang dry.  Do you then need to iron?

No, I never do. They come out looking just fine. Also, they are made in the USA.  FlAg1

Let me welcome you to 2006, if not earlier. That was the year I bought some Officials Choice shirts with the lightweight poly material that was open stich (sort of a micro-micro-mesh). I think the next year, Honigs came out with a soft, closed stiched shirt that wasn't bad, but the collar sucked. I had 2 of them and wore them for all varsity games I worked through 2009 (where I wore short sleeve). This was a very lightweight shirt. Last year, I got the Smitty shirt -- even lighter and more comfortable than the Honigs with a fabric that doesn't saturate, dries quickly, and has a nice, silky feel to it. I think the Smittys are the best, but I'm told that Cliff Keen and Gerry Davis make good shirts as well, though I haven't worn either. The CK shirts don't feel as good as the Smittys, but that's my opinion and its all personal choice. The Honigs are at least in the same league.

Bottom line, the shirt materials are top notch and can't get a whole lot better. You will never see a cotton or even a cotton/poly blend -- they used to have those but they faded terribly. Plus, they look horrible, hold moisture, are heavy, and otherwise impractical. Polyester is a generic term by the way and doesn't automatically mean the old double knit fabric of yesteryear. Go shopping!

I have the ump-attire shirts in both long and short sleeve. They are great, easy to care for and never need to be ironed. Plus they have excellent customer service. I have never had an order messed up when dealing with them. Honigs could only wish to have service as good...

The only reason the placards look professional is because that's what the professionals wear.  I have a feeling if we wore placards at lower levels but the NFL went with plain shirts people would clamor for plain shirts because "it looks clean and professional."  What's the history behind the placards, anyway? Who added them first, and why?

The NFL originally put the position name on a plate across the shoulders, late 70's maybe?

Don't remember when college added the placards.

I have zero desire to switch over to 2" stripes. Leave it like it is...high school 1", college 2" and the wide stripe for NFL. As far as positions on our shirts...why?

Placard is an acceptable synonym.  :)
