Heard a rumor Alabama was experimenting with instant replay. Any truth to this?

It happened this past spring/summer.

There was a lot of excitement surrounding the concept during our baseball finals this past spring (some people were discussing the football spring games coming up).

Yikes - Every parent with a smart phone is now a replay official.

Unless the overall objective is never ending argument and confrontations, Replay, at the NFHS level seems like an unproductive and excessive solution in search of a reasonable problem.

The problem, as I see it, is that there will only be two angles, which will not significantly improve accuracy.

There are two main places we need help from replay.  The first is on goal line situations.  This system won't help, since we'd need a shot down the line from both sides and from directly above.

The other is on catch/no catch.  IR might help on close plays where the receiver is going to the ground and the pass is low, but it's not likely to help on inbounds/OOB at the sideline.

I'll likely be retired from the field before this is implemented.  Maybe I can be a replay official.....

Unless this is for championship games only, where there are cameras on GLs and SLs (as bama_stripes mentioned), this all relies upon two cameras (pressbox & EZ) with questionable resolution that can almost never really be used to confirm or deny anything.

If it happens, expect to hear the following a lot: "The ruling on the field stands."

IMHO....
  (1) Replay videos are great for determining if the official was in the best position to make the call;

  (2) the eyes of the video are never the eyes of the covering official;

  (3) the players play w/o the use of videos...often the video will see a receiver open
       that the QB doesn't;

  (4) the coaches coach w/o the use of computers calculating the success rate of a
       potential play;

  (5) the frenzied masses cheer/boo/whatever w/o "applause please" prompters.....

OUR GAME IS PLAYED BY HUMANS,
        COACHED BY HUMANS,
          CHEERED BY HUMANS,
            AND OFFICIATED BY HUMANS...

     LET'S KEEP IT THAT WAY tiphat:

While I am not advocating replay at the HS level (or any level), these two statements are no longer true.

QB throws an INT.  He comes to the sideline, is handed an iPad, and immediately sees the play that just happened.  Seeing who was open, and now, more importantly, who was not.

Coaches keep scouting reports on those same iPads, or on computers in the press box.  They are consulted throughout the game regarding play selection, tendencies, etc.

For better or worse, electronics are now a part of the game.

We Mainers are still worried as to what to do when we see our first drone invade gridiron airspace :).

We had that issue for the past couple of years.  The GHSA stepped in and said "no drones in the stadium".

The fact that we had to have a rule shows it was an issue.
