Stealing the snap
« on: October 30, 2016, 11:06:00 AM »
I watched this multiple times, but still couldn't see the ball. Apparently the NG stole the ball from the snapper. I've seen snappers in youth football who were very slow, but I've never seen a HS snapper be slow enough for this to be legal. What do you think?

Choice is wonderful.  You can choose to seek the one human being who may be quick enough to successfully pull this off, or accept the fact no such person (ever has or ever will) exist, resulting in an Encroachment foul.

I have encroachment...I just watched the last :30 seconds which took 22 minutes.  This includes the Umpire throwing a penalty for pass interference in the end zone 30 yards away on a play in front of the BJ.

Here is the full clip, this one hurts to watch.

Wow...that's.....just, wow. That entire crew may be enjoying a very early retirement.

To paraphrase....
Entering the neutral zone before the ball is snapped = encroachment (2-8).
A snap shall immediately leave the hand(s) of the snapper (7-2-4).
Superman was "faster than the eye could see".
Superman would not be playing nose guard...

IMHO : snap infraction OR encroachment on B.

Quote from: The linked article
The play came after numerous, failed attempts to achieve the stunt, resulting in back-and-forth false starts and offside penalties against each team.

Quote from: 9-10-5
Neither team shall commit any act which, in the opinion of the referee, tends to make a travesty of the game. PENALTY: The referee enforces any penalty he/she considers equitable, including the enforcement of a score.

Were I the referee here, it would be my opinion that repeated attempts to do this tend to make a travesty of the game. The penalty I would consider equitable is simple: The game is over.

Agree. The wording "travesty of the game" has never been more applicable.
