Starting the Clock
« on: May 27, 2023, 08:00:45 PM »
With 7:00 mins left in the 1st quarter, on 2nd and 10, A10 take the snap runs out of bounds after gaining 5 yards.  As we know the clock will be restarted on the referee's signal and in the past that signal always varied.  Some would wait until the ball was spotted and others would wind it when the ball was just inches above the ground but not yet spotted.  So when should we be starting it?  Two weeks ago, at the Referee clinic, Shaw told us to start the clock as soon as the ball is beginning to be relayed in so that we are doing it all the same.

In contrast:  With 1:30 left in the 2nd quarter, 3rd and 1 at the 50.  A10 takes the snap and runs for a 10-yard gain where he is stopped inbounds.  So now when are we starting it?  On the relay?  Nope, we will wait until the ball is spotted and the spotting official is moving away from the ball and in a position to officiate.  Communicate with the QB that the clock will start on your signal.

TV has got this game so screwed up, and virtually all NCAA execs have been sucked into their trap. Geez.
But, there is a difference between the two scenarios. One is a first down inbounds (inside 2 minutes in 2nd/4th periods), and the other is an out of bounds play (other than inside 2 minutes in 2nd/4th periods). Still, there shouldn’t be a difference. All for TV.
