Fumbled Forward
« on: October 10, 2022, 07:23:04 AM »
Scenario--2 point conversion. QB keeper around right side. Tackled at the 2. Ball comes out and rolls into the end zone. Line judge has inadvertent whistle while ball is loose. Offense recovers in end zone. (Not the guy that fumbled) What's the call?

Would it make a difference in high school under NFHS rules i the ball was if in the officials judgement, ,  that the ball was intentionally fumble.

Several things in play here:

(1)  Unlike other codes, there is no “fumble forward” rule in NFHS.  Any player may recover and advance.

(2)  When an IW sounds while the ball is loose following a fumble, the team in last possession (offense in this case) has a choice:  Take the ball where it was when possession was lost and count the down, or replay the down entirely.  On an unsuccessful try, they would obviously replay the down.

(3)  If a fumble is judged to be intentional, it’s an illegal forward pass.  The penalty is 5 yards from the spot of the foul and loss of down.  A LOD foul on a try ends the try.

In (3) this scenario would take precedence over the IW and the down or try would not be replayed.

More directly, the whistle would NOT be inadvertent as the play would be dead following an incomplete forward pass.

It would be more of a "task failed successfully" situation, but still...

IMHO if he's going down "at the 2" some part of his body would have to be behind the line and this would simply be an incomplete legal forward pass.
It's easy to get the players, getting 'em to play together, that's the hard part. - Casey Stengel
