A BLOWOUT?
« on: September 29, 2012, 10:11:59 AM »
Had one of those "How did that happen?" games last night.

Game played in torrential rain (new turf field thankfully) with score 28-0 just before half.  Game was so one-sided we were contemplating how high the score could go during a timeout.  The trailing team runs back a very short punt and has a goal-to-go situation and punches one in just before the half and it's 28-6 with one team with over 300 yds offense and the other with negative offense.

2nd half, the trailing team comes out throwing (30+ passes), scores 5 straight times and wins 35-28.  When asked during halftime how "liberal" we should be with the clock, my response was let's just wait and see.  Probably a good answer - you never know.....

I don't know anyone who would suggest "tweaking" the clock when score is 28-0 that early in the game.  Once you got to 28-6 then you were definitley not going to do anything the rest of the way.  Just because a team came from 28 down at halftime is no reason not to consicer tweaking the clock in other scenarios.

Here in Brasil we are going non-stop clock when, in the 4th quarter, there's a 30 points dif. Mercy rule

Similar rule (even under the same name ...) applies here in Italy.
Depending on level it kicks in from 3rd or 4th qtr when there is a +35 pts differential and stays in 'till end of game even if trailing team starts to recover.
