Roughing the Snapper
« on: October 06, 2022, 01:07:03 PM »
I was reading through other comments on this topic but couldn't find a clear answer. Rule 9-4-6 specifically mentions roughing the snapper while A is in scrimmage-kick-formation, but is it possible to have a "roughing-snapper" personal foul if A is NOT in such a formation? Is that the only time this can occur? :embarassed:

"Roughing the snapper" can only happen when in a scrimmage kick formation due to the defenseless nature of a long snapper during the snap. It is possible to commit a personal foul against a snapper in other scenarios, but a direct charge into the snapper is not a prima facie foul.

If a personal foul is committed against a snapper not in a scrimmage kick formation, there would not be an automatic first down included either.

We added 9-4-5 to provide better protection for the snapper back in 1997. He is most vulnerable when in scrimmage kick formation as he is often looking thru his legs to the locate the recipient. It was reported that in many football circles coaches would have a 'gentleman's agreement' not to dump the opponent's snapper as to it's potential injury. Remember, guys, the R & U should roll their hands and announce : "SNAPPER'S GOT PROTECTION...SNAPPER'S GOT PROTECTION !!" as gentle reminder  :) .

One other place this could be a foul, is in your 6 or 8 man codes... In Texas, for 6-man, any time the QB is not under center, he is afforded protection, for both scrimmage kicks and offensive formations.  There may be a similar requirement in those rulesets (uncommon as they are).

I don't know anything about NFHS 6 or 8 man codes, but just throwing this out as a possibility.
