8 man clarification
« on: August 28, 2022, 10:06:16 AM »
Our association has a school that has moved to 8 man this season.

Quick question about formations as rule book sounds contradictory

How many are required to be on LOS at snap?   Is it 3 or 5?

Thanks!

It depends on how many players are in the formation.  The important thing to remember is that there cannot be more than 3 backs.

Usually there are 5 lineman and 3 backs.

If for some reason there are only 7 on the field it is not a foul.   Either 4 linemen and 3 backs or 5 linemen and 2 backs would be legal.

If they are down to only 5 players they would likely forfeit, but they could play on if they wanted to.  They have to a minimum of 3 linemen though.

It's not just an 8 man thing.  In 11 man you must have a minimum of 5 linemen numbered 50-79 and no more than 4 backs.

So the answer to the question is 3?

It is a minimum of 3 linemen at the snap.  The eight player rules differences are listed near the end of the 2022 Rules Book (page 89 and 90 in my paper copy).  The specific answer is Rule 6-b.

Like 11-man ,with no more than 4 in the backfield, in 8-man you can have no more than 3 in the backfield. Positions, not numbers, determine eligibility

The question is, “how many are required to be on the line at the snap?”  The answer is at least 3.

Got it.  As long as there at lest three it is a legal formation.
