I know I've told this story before, but I still get a chuckle
when I think about it......
It was a cold, wet November day as my buddies and I sipped some antifreeze in prep for the annual rivalry game between UMaine-UNH game. The field was a mud bowl and, entering the 4th quarter, was scoreless. UMaine had the ball around UNH's 15 with 4th down and with Coach Jack Bicknell, who later coached Doug Fluite @ BC. The field goal team entered,our kicker was an excellent vollyball player.....
(1) The holder pitched the ball up at a backward angle.
(2) The kicker spiked the ball towards the EZ.
(3) The TE slopped towards the ball in the EZ.
(4) UNH had one player back, he wasn't interested in slopping into the EZ.
(5) The TE picked up the ball AND......
(NCAA had only a 5 man crew then)
We all leaped to our feet
some fell
(alcohol may have been a cocontrituting factor)
EPILOGUE; The following day, NFL Today showed the play . The following year, both NCAA & NFHS made the play illegal.
