At the end of the day the person who had the authority to decide the facts decided that Brady "did it."  That is what matters.  Much as during a football game the "officials have spoken."  Some people do not know when the game is over.

Problem is that sorry excuse for an "investigation" was one-sided, biased, and fueled by the 24 hour news cycle and envy of the Patriots' success. Your football analogy is more like the white hat having a $500 bet on the game he's working. Sure he's got the authority to make the call, but if he's doing it to further his own agenda, that is a reflection on the referee's integrity, not the players'.

The NFL never even tried to hide the fact that they were out to get the Pats from day one. Sensationalist media reports whipped people up into a lather, and we all know that in the court of public opinion, there's never a tall enough tree.

So, now Brendan you are impuning your own profession.  The League did not conduct the investigation. Instead they hired outside counsel to conduct the investigation. Which, by the way, is pretty standard for corporate America.  Bring in an outside entity to do the investigation. There is no one that has accused Ted Well, or his firm of any bias.  They do not get paid any more or any less depending on the outcome.  They complied a report from investigating the facts, interviewing the witnesses, getting expert opinion.  If you believe that the law firm went into the investigation with an objective in mind I would suggest that you know nothing of how the law works -- and you should drop out of law school now.

Your homer is showing
Coach: "I've been doing this 30 years!  I know the rules!"
Ref: "Are you married coach?"
Coach (suddenly offguard): "umm...yeah, why?"
Ref: "I've been married 30 years and my wife says there is still room for improvement"
Coach: "<silence>"

Why would the NFL refuse to allow Wells to be questioned, citing attorney-client privilege?

Questioned by who?  And about what?  The report itself was produced.  It was a through report -- it said who they interviewed, when, what they provided, the experts consulted.  Brady and the NFLPA could have interviewed each of these people and otherwise had ample opportunity to discredit the Report.  The Report drew a conclusion based on the investigation.  The conclusion was, in part, that there was a 51% probability that Brady was involved in the deflation of the balls.  The NFLPA was free to argue why the conclusion was wrong.  They failed to convince the arbitrator -- Goodell.  Court of Appeals said Goodell had authority to make the finding and issue the punishment.  Wells was not part of that process.

::) Equating Goodell with Hitler is a bit of a stretch.  Goodell hasn't killed millions, yet.  Care to ratchet it back a bit?
