Weird Play at end of Regulation
« on: November 09, 2010, 07:35:19 AM »
Here's a weird ending to regulation tied  0-0...with Qb trying to run out the clock to get to

For some reason I can't get the link to take...but it's in the Orlando Sentinel  story titled  Oviedo beats Winter Springs....
What happened was the QB was trying to run out the clock to get to OT in a game tied at 0-0.   When the clock hit :00....he stopped....the defender stripped the ball and ran for the game winning  TD.....as of course the play had not technically ended...because the player was not down....  Weird....

That's not really the whole story.  The QB was running around trying to run the clock out to get to overtime.  He heard the horn sound (it wasn't turned off) and went to the referee to hand him the ball.  The ref did nothing and a defender came up  and took the ball and ran for a TD.  This was a 3 team shootout to determine the district champ an runner up.  Three teams were tied for the 1st spot in the district.   Losing team in the 1st quarter is out with the remaining teams playing for the champ and runner up spot in the next 2 (if need be) quarters.  Turns out winner of the 1st quarter won the 2nd and was the district champ.

Explain a "shootout" please.  Never heard of that.  We just flip a coin.

Here is the GHSA version:

GHSA TIE-BREAKER MINI-GAME PROCEDURE (NOTE: The option to play a Mini-Game to break a tie is available
only to regions that have adopted the GHSA plan for breaking ties without any modifications)
1. The schools shall meet at a site selected by the GHSA Executive Director for a playoff on the Monday night after
the end of the regular season.
2. The games will consist of two five-minute halves. The play begins for the first half with a free kick, and standard
game rules and scoring are used.
3. There will be a two-minute intermission between the two halves. Play begins for the second half with a free kick.
4. Each team will be given two (2) timeouts in the first five (5) minutes and one timeout in the second five (5) mintes.
Unused timeouts in the first five minutes may be carried over to the second five minutes.
5. If the score is tied at the end of two overtime periods, the teams will go to the GHSA 15-yard overtime procedure.
6. A coin toss will determine the order of play.
a. When three teams are tied for one open spot, the team winning the toss gets a bye - and then plays the
winning team of the first Tie-Breaker game.
Example: Team “C” gets a bye
Team “A” plays Team “B”
Team “C” plays the winner of game 1
Winner of game 2 qualifies for the playoffs
b. When three teams are tied for two open spots, the following format will be used.
Example: Team “C” get a bye
Team “A” plays Team “B” and the winner
qualifies
Team “C” plays the loser of game 1 and
the winner qualifies
If Team “C” wins game 2, the regular
season winner between Team “C” and
the winner of game 1 will have the higher
placement
c. When four teams are tied for one open spot, the pairings will be determined by draw and the following format
will be used.
Example: Team “A” plays Team “B” in game 1
Team “C” plays Team “D” in game 2
Winner of game 1 plays winner of game 2
Winner of game 3 qualifies
d. When four teams are tied for two open spots, the pairings will be determined by draws and the following
format will be used.
Example: Team “A” plays Team “B” in game 1 and
the winner qualifies
Team “C” plays Team “D” in game 2 and
the winner qualifies
The winner of the regular season game between the two winning teams will
have the higher placement
7. When teams play a mini-game tiebreaker on a Monday, their first round playoff game will be scheduled for the
following Saturday unless both schools agree to play on Friday.

And they contract with an officiating crew just like a regular game?

Florida Shootouts:  When district champs and runners up cannot be determined by record.  If runner up only cannot be determined.  If only two teams in running, one quarter is played.  Winner is runner up.  If three teams, then highest seeded team (best overall record) gets bye in first quarter.  Other teams play and winner goes on to play the bye team. Loser goes home.  If winner beats bye team, they advance.  If bye team wins, they play another quarter.  Ties are decided by our regular season OT procedures (Alternate possesions from the 10 YL).  That's the basic premise.  A little different if both champ and runner up are to be determined, but you get the message.  Crews are assigned by the FHSAA.  We cannot do teams in the state playoffs that we do during the year. The shootouts were last night as all district games had to be played by last Friday.  This Fridays games are all non district and are usually rivalry games.  State level playoffs start at the regional level.  We have no district championships per se.  They are decided by regular season records except as above.

State assigns the crew, as they do for all playoff games.  I assume officials get a playoff game fee.

AB, I guess nobody has ever complained that in a 3-way tie, an already energy-depleted team A or B (depending on who won the first game) is playing a fresh team C?

AB, they get a full game fee plus mileage no matter the number of periods required.

Oh, I'm sure they have.  After all, coaches complain about everything!

Opposite side of that is that Team A or B has had a "quarter" to warm-up, while Team C is starting cold.  There may actually be something to that - we have scored more points in the second quarter than in any other this year.

They get 20 minutes between periods to warm up.

Not the kind of "warm up" that I mean.  I mean that the teams in the first mini-game have already had 10 minutes of game action, which is far better than any "warm up".  The opposite side of that is that it takes more out of you as well.  Just all depends on how any given team handles it.
