Invalid Fair Catch Signal
« on: December 29, 2010, 09:37:30 AM »
How would we enforce this play under fed rules? Down, distance, who has ball and why.

A-4-10-50. Punt, B1 gives an invalid fair catch signal at the B20 and lets the ball go over his head where it rolls out of bounds at the B10. Immediately after the ball goes out of bounds, B2 commits a USC.

The foul is a PSK foul and will be enforced under all but one with the end of the kick being the basic spot.  Spot of the foul is in advance of the basic spot so you enforce from the basic spot (B-10).

The USC is a dead ball foul and will be enforced half the distance to the goal from the succeeding spot, which is the B-5 after the penalty for the invalid fair catch signal is enforced.  1st and 10 for B at the B-2.5 yard line.

Invalid fair catch signal by B1 is a live Ball foul with PSK-qualifying enforcement (10-4-3; 2-16-2h).  5-yd penalty; enforce from spot where ball went out of bounds - 10 yd line (spot where kick ended).

Then, enforce B2's dead ball USC foul from the succeeding spot (10-4-5a); half the distance to the goal.  1st and 10 for B from their 2.5 yd line.

Now, what if B's foul was an illegal signal?  How would that be handled?

I thought an illegal signal is one after the ball is possessed.  Can we have an illegal signal while the ball is loose?

If I'm right on the illegal signal, the foul occurred during a running play, so it would be enforced at the end of the run or the spot of the foul under ABO.  Once that's enforced, tack on the USC from the succeeding spot as well.

You are correct that an illegal signal is any signal (valid or invalid) that comes after the kick has been caught or recovered (2-9-5a,b).  The ball remains alive and the penalties are enforced as you indicate (2009 CB 4.2.2H;6.5.8A)

ahhh - Now I get it. I was stuck on the following.

PSK - 5 yard penalty and a re-kick A-4-5-B45 then enforce the USC A-1-10-B30.

I didn't think it was correct but I couldn't figure it out. Thanks guys!
