I find it very interesting that some parts of the country put so much effort into timers. I wish we would here in Illinois. Timers are provided by the home school. We can only hope they have some knowledge of the timing rules. For the most part it works out OK, but occasionally you can get some pretty good home cooking. We send the back judge up to the press box to talk to the timer before every varsity game, just to make sure they understand the basics and answer any questions they may have.

Indiana is the same. Most of our clock operators do fine. If it's bad enough we'll have a conversation at half or take it over on the field but both are rare. I wouldn't be opposed to having officials be assigned as ECO/PCO but we don't have enough. I also wouldn't be opposed to the state training and certifying ECO/PCO, but I've never heard a big push for that. The people the schools get to do this take their role seriously and do the best they can.
