Smitty black pants
« on: October 20, 2013, 01:29:14 AM »
I bought several pairs of Smitty warm weather black pants on special last year.

Several officials (one with a brand new pair yesterday) have had the zipper blow out. Anyone else encountered this ?
For every coach that thinks we got it wrong there's another that thinks we got it right.

I wouldn't worry about it. You already own them. ;)

Borrow a ziptie from your H if necessary.

Yes I've heard of that happening.  I think if you buy them now the zippers are better quality.

Yep, had that happen three weeks ago and had to wear my rain pants, talk about a sauna on my lower body!  Went to a local seamstress and had a metal zipper put in  ^TD

This happened to me twice last year. First time was the first game I wore them at, failed at half time. I emailed both Smitty and the company I ordered them from and the overnighted me a replacement pair. Wore that pair twice, and on the second game, it's zipper too failed. They sent me a third pair. It was OK and never failed. I spent about $14 each to repair the two bad zippers.

My R said I had to stop looking at the cheerleaders.

Smitty has awesome customer service.

Smitty has awesome customer service.
They'd better with the kind of product they put out.

With the exception of the zipper issue, I have no complaints with the pants. Much better than the H brand, IMO.

Find yourself a good seamstress/sewing lady. Replacement zippers in my area run somewhere between $8-$10.  z^

Do you guys like wearing pants over knickers? I honestly think the officials look better in the black pants.

Yes. Once I started wearing pants, I wanted nothing to do with knickers anymore.

I was very doubtful about them until I wore them for the first time, then I was an instant convert.  I think that's going to be a popular sentiment.

Agreed - I was skeptical at first but they are cooler, easier to put on, without having to cuff your socks etc and you can even comfortably wear a knee brace under them with no problem.

I am probably the last guy on earth who still wishes knickers were around.

Lots of sports have refs with stripes. Lots of sports have refs with black pants. Lots of sports have refs with hats. But only football had refs with knickers. I liked the uniqueness and the traditional, anachronistic-in-a-good-way look.

Yes, yes you can. lol!  I was a lineman for 6 years in Jr. High and High School and my knees took a beating.  It's much easier to 'hide' braces under the long pants.

The first step to recovery is knowing you have a problem.

Decades from now, our grandsons will sit on our knee and ask :" Grandpa, is it true that football officials used to dress like George Washington?? ???" We can then reply : "Not anymore, not anymore. :-[" Someday we'll have to update this guy...... ^TD!!

Just when you think you're alone in the universe,  you find out you're not the only one who had to canvass your crew mates for safety pins during the pre-game. Yep. Last game. Smitty Zipper. Gone.

The new Honigs lightweight pants have a little flag pocket just below the belt on the right side...if you have a black tipped flag, it completely disappears.  Kinda made me have pants envy!

Those don't work. My flag kept falling out so it just went right back into my waistband.

The opening needs to be sewn up tighter but I think the weight of the ball will cause it to pull out anyway.
Of course, if you inverted the ball.........??????

Next Honig's marketing gimmick- the black edged flag with yellow bottom and ball.

Eventually, twenty years later, the flag is more black than yellow...so it becomes black flags and orange bean bags.
