Mexican football team backs out of Stony Point game

By Danny Davis | Wednesday, September 7, 2011, 02:03 PM

With a week to go before a showdown with state-ranked DeSoto, Stony Point has received some unexpected free time.

Round Rock ISD athletic director Jim Loerwald confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that Monterrey Tech has backed out of a game that was scheduled to be played on Thursday against Stony Point. According to Loerwald, Monterrey Tech, a football team from Mexico that played games at The Woodlands and Highland Park over the past two weeks, claimed that a cartel was demanding $30,000 in order to let Monterrey Tech cross and come back across the border.

“Do we have a way to verify it? No,” Loerwald said.

Loerward said that discussions were held with Akins and Wimberley, two teams that had games canceled this week because of fires in the Bastrop area. Loerward said, however, that replacement games could not be worked out because of Wimberley’s classification and Akins’ desire not to play a game with so little time to prepare.

The Monterrey Tech cancellation - as well as rumors that were previously circulated about the ages of players on a University of Nuevo Leon team that Stony Point beat two weeks ago - will probably impact future scheduling decisions by Round Rock ISD. Both Mexican teams played Stony Point during the 2009 and 2010 seasons because of the Tigers’ troubles with filling out a schedule.

“I don’t think that will be a priority,” Loerwald said. “The only reason we got locked in this deal was because nobody wanted to play Stony Point.”
