Wow.  If we, as officials, ever feel our safety is in jeopardy, we should just get off the field.  They did the right thing, but no one should have stayed on that field after they decided to call it and they should have all left together.

No doubt.  They'd figure it out on their own the game was cancelled.  We aren't sticking around to explain it to them.  They'd get the hint.

Helpful hints as a hotly contested game whines down:

(1) Have HL retrieve his chain clip before it ends;
(2) leave jackets in locker room at halftime;
(3) as for an escort off the field (body guard type, no the other >:D);
(4) Quaker meeting : no smiling/laughing/talking or handshakes until off the field;
(5) take off hat @ whistle - one makes good memorabilia...the other a good noose.

Which is why I use a breakaway lanyard. Learned that officiating wrestling for years.

I don't use the round-the-neck style of lanyard in either football or basketball because lanyards against bare skin make my neck itch. I use a Smitty-style clip-on lanyard in basketball, and a finger whistle in football, so (5) doesn't really apply to me.

What the Dunbar player just did was as stupid and senseless as the John Jay players tackling the back judge in San Antonio, if not worse. Dunbar Dayton got off easy with a forfeit. I wouldn't be surprised if the OHSAA hands out a postseason ban for that action, because this was not the first incident of egregiously bad sportsmanship from that school.

That was intended for those (like me) above the Mason/Dixon Line :)

Got it.  We might need a jacket in late November, but not usually.

I understand the jacket in those days, but what is the stick for?

Penalty enforcement?

Penalty enforcement?

Ouch.  Yeah, that rod looks to be about 3 feet long.  Maybe a "15 yard penalty" meant a lot more in those days... :o
